As above, when i start the car there is a sharp whining sound, it only lasts for about 30 seconds, then i dont hear it again until the car cools down and i start it up again.

any idea, if it helps i think it is coming from the drives side of the engine bay.

    TIA

One of your drive belts is loose.

You either need to retension if they are reletively new, or replace if over stretched due to age.

Also check for any leaking fluids from the drive belt area as well. Bit of power steering fluid or oil will cause them to squeel like little piggies.

only had it serviced a few weeks ago. ill check it out, does the squeel stop because the liquid gets removed, or because it heats up?

It is not the alternator belt?

A belt will stop squealing as the electrical load is reduced once the car is warm and the battery charged. It is a very simple check for correct tension, as the belts should move no more than 5-10mm when flexed inbetween pulleys. The power steering leak is a possibility, but this would havppen at random intervals if leaking on the belt, not just when cold. I suspect that based on you had it serviced the belts were replaced and have just stretched a little after running for a little time.

Mate when i bought my Zed i had the exact same issue, only happened when it was cold. I got the timing belts replaced as my car was due for the 100k service. I believe its a tension issue, i got my tensioners replaced and this solved the problem i say its a tension issue because i got the belts replaced and still had the same sound but not quite as bad, i took it back and they informed me that they needed to re adjust the new tension arms - which consequently fixed the issue i was having with the high pitch squealing sound.

It is definitely loose belts(or a seized AC Compressor).
BTW, what are these "new tension arms"of which you speak(and did they invoice you for them)?:confused::confused:

Hey Chilli, it was done when i first became a member here when i first bought my Zed, i made the rookie error of taking the car back to Nissan where i got thoroughly ripped off getting my 100k service (ended up having to take it back 4,5 times). I don't have the invoice anymore as its probably still in the Dash of the car when i wrote it off :( but the 100k service ended up costing me 2.5k and i remember specifically being explained that i needed new tensioners (he may not have said arms) for the belt and they needed adjusting - but i was young a naive and he could have been pulling my leg - he also said that it could be spilt radiator fluid on the belts causing them to squeak which i can tell you wasn't the problem!

Either way after that they ended up fixing it and i was happy, sorry if the information i provided was not correct hehe. As i would have no idea just passing on what i was told.

OK! There is some small confusion in your previous post.
The Tensioner you refer to is located inside the Timing Belt Cover(and has nothing whatever to do with "squealing belts"(believe me when I say that if your Timing belt was slipping, you would no longer have an engine that was turning over).
The belts that are slipping/squealing are the Fan belt/Power Steering belt/AC belt combination(any or all could be the culprit). Check each belt independantly for correct tension by finding a point midway between two pulleys on the said belt, and try deflecting same(the belt should move up & down over a total distance of less than 1 cm.)if it moves a greater amount, then you need to adjust each belt separately(see advice in Workshop Manual on where to locate each adjuster).

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks Chilli,
I know its (probably) an easy fix but im having Niall look at for me, and iI know the pain of a slipped timing belt, it happened to me about 2 months after buying my zed, lots of money into getting those problems fixed...
