Hi guys, Was just wondering if I could just chuck this over my pod filter so that I won't get defected. Or does the law strictly state that there must be a fully enclosed box around it? Thanks in advance. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Pod-Air-Filt...ccessories&hash=item1c19f4c8e1#ht_5513wt_1139
Having it mounted directly off the AFM it is seperate to the engine compartment and hence ok. Strictly speaking it should be bracketed back to the chassis, do that and you will be fine. Anywat, it's under the nose panel, cops won't even notice it.
i know ive mentioned it being legal before, but there are multiple people saying it isnt, a few gurus have also said yay and nay, so at the moment its undecided if its legal or not (on the forums atleast) so for the inspection just make up the flowerpot "box" so it will pass, then take it off if need be just to be on the safe side
In NSW its not legal unless its boxes and secured properly, doesn't matter wether its in the engine bay or not. Although i dont really care and run an open filter anyway.
I got pulled over last year, I had atleast 2 of my tyres unroadworthy, BOV to atmo and horn don't work... I had a pod filter too under the nose panel but it wasnt visable due to FMIC. He checked the clearance under the car cause "sometimes when fitting larger wheels the car gets lowered..." I explained to him that larger rims usually are larger in diameter even with low profile rims and he seemed greatful to learn something new... Next up "can you pop the bonnet for me?" I just grinned and did as he said... " not much space at all is there...no room for...blow off valves or anything like that?" me: no sir, all stock. "alright off you go then" *Drives away slowly so loud exhaust is not noticeable and BOV are quiet on gear change* Good times! I reckon as long as you're not low on points then don't worry yourself about a possible pod filter defect... realistically for a cop to want to give you a ticket bad enough he will remove your nose panel then even that is all good he will find something else to give you a ticket for!
I was actually defected for this before, on my rolla and while it was secured it didnt have a box around it , but it also wasnt in the engine bay, it was down inside the splash guard behind the bumper and the cop could see it through the little air vents and he got me for it and I asked him what the deal with that was and he said that it had to be tested doing drive by noise testing cause of something about induction noise, not sure whether he was just spinning shit but when I get my z engineered I will ask the engineer.
Harley Davidson M/cycles changed from a rear chain drive to a rubber belt drive soley for that reason...... Had they of not done this then Harleys wouldnt of been allowed in many countries due to noise limit excess' Australia was one of the first countries to have these styles of laws and subsquent 'drive by' testing This testing is one reason we DONT see many exotic cars that are allowed in other countries here.
Whats the decibel limit on a harley? They are crazy loud... my old celica got defected for loud exaust cause it was 103db (limit is 90db at like 75% of revs) and driving beside a bike you couldn't hear my car... I really just don't understand it...I have long had a theory that someone high up is a biker secretly or is taking some heavy bribes!
AFAIK all the newer ones have to be at 94dB which means that the ones that are really loud should be defected but somehow they do get away with it. But then again I guess its like alot of the people putting louder exhausts on a V6 or a V8 they dont get hounded on as much because it sounds good, where as if someone put a 3 inch pipe on their honda or something they would be pulled over straight away cause they dont seem to have the same appeal.
