I live in south Australia and I own a 90 300z non turbo auto. Trans has been slipping and running really crappy. Iv just been quoted 3320$ from start to finish. Has anyone had this cheaper? And how does it run??
ouch! You could source one on here, or to a manual conversion. Manuals are more desirable (IMHO) than auto's so it wouldnt do the resale value of your zed any harm. Gees for 3K you can get a brand new manual box and all the gear to go along with it..
For manual conversion would cost 4300$ from the same place. I still want the auto rebuild but hoping it makes a hug difference
Hell no dude, don't do it. Just get another box. I gave the last one to Simms metal for free!!! Should be able to find a decent box for around $200ish...
$3320 sounds about right, maybe a bit on the high side. Aim for $3000 all up. A second hand box is a big gamble. After $$$ for installation you may find it works even worse, or fails shortly. Any box with 100k+ on it is likely to fail soon, especially a $200 one. Only box I would touch is one with documented rebuild that has been removed due to a light write off. Those pulled out for a manual conversion - did the conversion happen because the auto was rooted ? UAS have an 'UPGRADED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FOR NISSAN 300ZX' $2200 Exchange with 12 months warranty. Add the work (and in your case shipping) and you are close to $3000. I had them do the box in Silver about 12 months ago. It cost me $2850 I think. So far after 15k it is going strong.
The Maths BBQ + Beer + Weekend + Forum Members + 3K @ CZP = Manual Conversion + Possible cash left over
my old man has a garage that builds auto and manual transmissions, he said full rebuild including converter no more that $2,500 for $3,300 you can have a shift kit fitted, heavy duty clutches as well and for another $200 an oil cooler.
I had mine done a while ago and ended up paying $3200 after being quoted $2800 because the torque converter needed replacing and a full re-build. I'm pretty sure I got ripped off, but at least I know what I have had done and that it won't fall apart on me again any time soon. Though in saying that, if I knew about the UAS deal I would have gone for that instead
these prices are off with the fairies. When I had the workshop I was paying $1650-1900 for a rebuild by wholesale automatics in bayswater. Depending on what was buggered. That was with a new T/C. So $2400 all up and that was with synthetic tranny oil. Look around a bit further. The auto is the same as one out of a 1990 Nissan Patrol 4x4 so try getting some quotes for a Patrol rebuild. Lots of places see "300zx" and add on an extra $1000 or more.
I had mine rebuilt just over 12 months ago. I paid $3200 in total. Which included him pulling it out finding what was wrong, putting back together and back in the car<Insert two weeks of further driving looking for another box>took it back and got a full rebuild with a mild shift kit.
Have a TT box here in Perth which I might be able to swing your way for $1300 shipped. Fully rebuilt 15,000kms ago...
wow that is $$$$$$ full rebuild I have been told from auto rebuild place. Is around $2000 We had our holden done and I ask what my na would be. And he said the same.
