I'm not selling my NA with my VB3's (considering they're not even mounted yet ) so it's rolling on stockies atm. which look shit. So I put some time and effort into them and updated them. Am very happy with the result!

Not sure of the brand of the primer I used, but it was hi-temp automotive touch-up paint. I used VHT wheel paint for the black and clear. The clear's got urethane in it which supposedly helps resist chipping. So far so good?

    the process...
    1) remove rim
    2) detail
    2.5) remove center cap
    3) sand
    4) prime and paint inner dish, -1 coat of colour and all clear
    5) mask off tyre and valve cap
    6) prime, 2-3 coats. Short, sweeping strokes starting across the lug holes. this is the best way to fully coat them down the holes, without over spraying and getting runs
    7) paint in chosen colour, same technique as primer, 3 coats
    8) do final coat of inner dish as to cover up any primer overspray from the front
    9) clear coat front 3 times, then inner dish 2-3 times
    10) same to center cap, I chose to mask off the "Z" but if you don't want to it'll be muuuuch easier
    11) be happy :)

I spent about a day (5 hours inc. all drying time) on each one to get them perfect. yes, I was rolling around with multicolour rims in the mean time please to stfu.

    pics!

Really super mega happy with them :D completely transformed the look of the car, no question. Hoping it'll speed up the sale when the time comes.

edit: don't try and touch up once they're on the car! in the second last pic you can see overspray on the tyre from when I missed a bit. I'll be redoing that one (first attempt) to bring it up to the standard of the others.

    Looks good.
Improvment on the old gray. Just don't get a flat. Tyre changers will chip and scratch em.

i actually didnt expect this to look this good, im not usually a fan of black wheels, but with the car being red, and the caliper being red, and the white writing it doesnt look too bad!

I like it, it amazes me how good it looks in comparison also. But i dont know wether id go to the extent of re-doing the whole rim because you got a bit of paint on the wheel wall.... i mean, when the rubber gets replaced, so does the spray, and with the rubber flexing so much on the road most of it wouldnt last anyway. unless theyres other impurities.

other than my two bob. 10/10. thoroughly impressed.

    cheers guys x)

re-doing the last rim 'cause I rushed it 'cause I was going out, lol. there're a few runs on it. I'll just give it a light sand and another coat of black, and the clears. give the tyre a scrub with some steel wool while I'm at it.

I'm a bit split on this.

    Your pics look great.

Dirty black rims look like crap, so keep them clean and shiny

it would look similar to vedar spec on a skyline. so id say yes but make sure your calipers are a different colour otherwise it will be too black.

    IMO :br:

Mm-'kay guys, as per request I'm putting up a little more info...

Not sure what I can say really, just FOLLOW THE STEPS. after making them up on the first rim I had much better success on the rest.

Knock yourself up one of these. You'll still have to stick the tape right into the gap on each rim, but it's useful none the less.

It's pretty easy really... the best tip is what I said before; always spray in short, side-to-side swipes, and start across the lug holes. go in one direction. then, for the second coat, do the same but with the rim rotated 90*. you'll get the rest of it, most of the way down. if you try and spray down the holes you WILL get overrun.

    what I used:

don't use that primer, it was shit. did the last rim with it, had to sand it down like 3 times 'cause it spat so unevenly everywhere. wish I knew what I used on the first 3... :(

so uh... yeah. PM me or post here if you want any more info

check ZRNT in 20 for another sweet-arse cheap mod thread
