hi there people i have a lil problem i drove from brisbane to melbourne the other day the car was perfect all the way there but when i got there the diff has now got a nice little whine to it and it is pretty loud when you get up to the 70k mark and over. has anyone got any ideas on whats wrong? and just so you know i dont know if the oil has ever been changed in it and it has only just started to make the noise.

its probably one of the bearings it its a tt diff just look for another one and give it some fresh oil when you fit it. new bearing will be pretty pricey :(

yeah it is a tt. Would it be worth trying a oil change and see if anything comes out of the diff like chuncks of metal?

wont hurt to give it a go ay. might be quiet low on oil, if it is the outer race on one of the bearing might have cracked.

Just make sure you remove the filler bung before removing the drain bung. Nothing worse than removing the drain bung to find the filler bung has rusted on and can't be removed

Rather than replace the bearing in the diff, I'd try source a 2nd hand diff. Cheap as chips, almost never fail (except maybe in this case) Should be able to pick one up for $50-$100...

tassuperkart Its a lie I tell you!

Diffs start to whine sometimes surprisingly quickly.
Gear noise and bearing noise are usually quite different animals altho there is sometimes a crossover of noises to confuse the issue.
If the whining pitch/noise/volume alters depending on whether you are on power, off power and trailing/part throttle then its most likely a ring/pinion issue.
If it whistles and kinda swooshes all the time regardless of power on or off then it will be a bearing issue.
And theyll often whine like that for the life of the car and worse case scenario is that the noise will annoy you!
A failing diff is pretty obvious and will make some real nasty noises just before it leaves you stranded.

Diff rebuilds can be expensive depending on how much stuff gets replaced. Just a simplr re-race of the diff might run to a couple of hundred if you remove the diff. Bearings and seals are rarely anything special and available at any bearing suppliers.
As mentioned, there are plenty of TT diffs laying around and if theres signs of trouble, just bog in another one. Ive got a M8 down here with one for 150.

Check your oil for shavings and chunks. If theres no real evidence of chunks and the oil does not look like grotty metallic paint then just fill it with plain old anybrand 80-90 gear oil or 85-140 if your a leadfoot in the heat and see how it goes.
If your about to sell the car, stuff the diff casing chock full of grease and banana peels on top of the normal oil and it will quieten it down!!

It probably just took some time for the oil to work its way around the internals of the dif. No noise now means it must have been low dif oil.
I just dropped my dif to change my sub-frame, my dif leaked oil during the swap and now I suffer the same symptoms. I'll top up the oil and it should be good as new :)
