    hey family,

finally got the car ready for starting and ready for tuning and noticed a prob.. when you intially turn the key to ON i get the [POWER] light flashing 16 times then goes off.. doesnt do it again untill you've turned the key off and turn it back to ON again..

had a search but couldn find anything of use and will do tranny error code test tomorrow but the guide doesn have anything referring to the 16 flashes at start up??

any help is much appreciated, im no good with auto boxes there just a box where black magic happens and the car then moves :p

    thanks

Is your car a manual that has been converted from an auto.
If so you probably still have an auto rather than a manual transmission ecu.
the flashes are telling you it cant find an auto transmission.

i thought the OP was obvious enough that its auto, but yes car was stock standard and auto, i had pulled the box and engine to do work etc., getting it ready for dyno and noticed the power light flashing 16 times when key is on,,, all connections look ok and havent touched the atcu, only thing changed in the passenger footwell is i have stand alone fuel management, also tps isn't plugged in at the moment if that makes any difference?

Tps is vital to the operation of the auto. Plug it in and try again.

i know that but didn think it will make too much difference when the car isn't running., thanks ill plug it in later when i get home and see if it stops flashing :)

ok... re-connected the front plug on the tps, connected the battery and turned the key to ON.. NO FLASHING [POWER] light,
turn the key off and then back on again and wait for it............ i get the 16 flashes from the [power] light again :bash:
    any ideas??

    thanks

as dedzed said im pretty sure the flashes are saying it cant find the auto trans, it wont let me do the auto trans self diagnostic to check for error codes, im guessing that would make sense if it cant see the gearbox?,
im hoping its just because it hasn't been started yet since it was removed from the car?
if it helps, there were no problems whatsoever with gearbox before the engine pull etc

and where are all the auto box guru's hiding??

thanks for the help so far guys

I get this occurance every so often myself:(. I however get random number of flashes and I still haven't got a clue what it means. From what I've been able to figure out from the little information on these flashes is its the ECU telling the driver there is an error code. I have done error checking after the initial flashes and it comes up clean. I think it must have to do with the AUTO ECU box having an error as I sometimes find Conzult cant pickup the AUTO ECU at all.

I have replaced my TPS with a brand new and and I replaced my blown transmission with a second hand one but still have this problem. I believe it is either the AUTO ECU is faulty or the wires from the TPS unit to the AUTO ECU box are faulty.

new wiring loom so that should'nt be the problem.. i hope its not the auto ecu, seems strange that it was fine and i haven't touched it for it to now be on the fritz, the first time i turn the key on after connecting the battery it doesn't flash, turn the key off then back on and it flashes 16 times

its really starting to piss me off :bash:

With the self diagnostic routine, I found that when the instructions called for the key to be turned off I was
having to turn it all the way off by pressing the release button. Or I'd get no result i.e. no blinking lights to identify the fault.
Might just be a quirk of my Zed's ignition but it's worth a try.

are you experiencing this with the shifter in Park with O/D ON? According to Manual (Diagnostic procedure 1), you have a fault with either:- "Inhibitor Switch, Overdrive Switch, Kickdown switch or idle switch circuit is disconnected or A/T control unit is damaged"

yes in P but also with O/D off and in any gear. turn the key on and [POWER] will come on for the normal 2 seconds then flash 16 times then doesn't flash again untill turned off and back to on.,
it doesn't do it the first time after the battery is reconnected i.e it does what its supposed to [POWER] comes on for 2 secs and goes out,

will check the things you said, however it selects each gear fine and O/D, HOLD and POWER all light up when selected, will check voltage at the ATCU to be sure but dont think that will be the problem as the manual diagnosis doesn't match..

i read the light also flashes with low battery/ or if the battery has been disconnected for long periods, which it has so my new batt doesn't loose charge, and the car hasn't been started yet, maybe this needs to happen after the batt is connected for it to see its all there?

    PROBLEM SOLVED..

well i think solved itself but maybe related,
we went to fire her up today and couldn't get power at the ECU, after much swearing and checking remembered we had removed the fuel pump relay so as not to prime the system accidently while the fuel lines weren't connected,
anyways figured what the hell and plugged the fuel pump relay back in and... taadaa the green light on ECU is on and has power, fired her up and started adjustments to base map and fuel pressure and noticed the [POWER] light doesn't flash anymore when the key is turned to ON

Thanks for the update. Now we have to try and join the dots.................

How would removing the fuel pump relay throw an auto transmission fault code?
Geez I love the control systems on these cars. They're very intuitive and user friendly

    Hey Guys,

I've got this exact problem too, 16 blinks on the power light

I went and bought an OBD Cable to connect up and check error codes, NOTHING???:confused:

Any ideas, where I should be looking?

    Cheers

i think its that it cant see the ATCU., in my case i had the fuel pump relay removed so as not to accidently prime the fuel system whilst wiring up gauges, and it seems that with that removed there was no power to ECU and therefore none to ATCU,
check the owners manual theres some trouble shooting in there you can work through that may narrow down the cause
