This was the first one of these events I have been on.....and haven't enjoyed myself as much in ages. A big thankyou to the organisers for a great run....the roads were a great test of my limited skills and I learned a lot about what the car is capable of.
Thanks Bryan for getting my car sorted and inviting me along....Can't wait for the next one.

Thanks to BigCol and badzx for organising another great cruise, I had forgotten how good GOR cruises are.
The inland roads were pretty good, does anyone have a googlemap for the route we took?

It was a great day. I enjoyed the change of course. A funny thing happened when a couple of us stopped at the garage at Apollo Bay. A black pulled up behind me ( i was thinking it was one of the cruise crew ). Ended up being a complete stranger in his Z that spotted all these Z's going past and pulled in to find out what was going on. I told him to get on the computer and check out the site so we will more than likely have another member. I reckon he thought it was a amazing site all these Z's. Next year we should get over 30 cars. To all you Zers that missed out , you really missed a fantastic cruise work at getting to the next one.And amazingly no rain. Thanks kingy and co. for puting in the effort to organise it and to have a wet weather plan. I actually liked the different route more than last years even with the long highway section , especially the quirt up the hill climb circuit.

    First up,
Thanks for the kind words and the thanks for the run...... pleasure was all mine :D

A few things came out of the w/ends run... things I didnt really expect.

    1/
    Two GOR's a year :D

One will open the Victorian crusing season which has just happened, and the 2nd will be like the close of the season, so for those that slept in you'll have a 2nd shot at the run.

The first run will be as we've just done, a mix of inland stuff with the actual GOR included

The 2nd will be a more layback day and wont include such a vast inland run..... lunch will be at Lorne...... details comming next year
    :p

    2/
Vary the course V's a Set course

I was considering locking in a specific route so that the run was the same for every year, it now appears that the complete opposite is wanted by the majority.
From the comments its obvious that the varity and mix of differant roads we've taken over the last few years is exactly what is making the run more interesting, differant scenery / differant challenging routes / and stops for social chats over lunch venues.....
The easy part for me is that next years GOR is now planned :br:

    3/
    The GOR........... at NIGHT

I've been bouncing this idea off of a couple of people on the quiet, and like myself they have done the GOR in the dark on a few occasions .....
I've now had a few others asking questions about the difficulties of the GOR at night ..... it may be worth taking a few on such a run as a test pilot.

If I go ahead with this idea it will be off forum initally and by invite only. Once the run is done those that go can look at what issues need addressing and fixed before a forum run could be initalised without a vast pile of safety issues.

The GOR at night is a whole new experiance, if you think the GOR in daylight is a little challenging then a night run isnt for you.

    4/
    Comunication

Sadly a few didnt go as the 'posibile' cancelation thoughts kicked in.
    This needs addressing right now.

If the run is canceled it will be posted within a reasonable time frame that will allow ALL members time to see it and act accordingly.

The GOR will NOT be cancelled for weather reasons unless MAJOR storms cause impassable roads.
SAFETY of the members attending is paramount.

If still in doubt, my phone number has been posted in all the past GOR threads & will be posted in all future runs, a simple call if your confused is all that is needed.

I'll agree with all of that. It will only improve what was already a fantastic event anyway.

Can I make one other suggestion? The intended route with approximate start, rest and stop times be posted up clearly on the morning? It can be a pre-prepared post that is just cut and pasted in the thread before we go.

That way, anyone who misses the start points or joins the cruise half way through already has a good idea of possible meeting points along the way.

Agree with Cliff on this. Would make it a lot more convenient for the maybe people.

  12. BigCol

    BigCol That's what she said...

Cliff, I agree that your suggestions are a great idea in a perfect world, but there are some practical issues with them:

    a) Rest times are usually dependant on how things are going on the day. For example we were 15 minutes late leaving the Westgate and that would have thrown timings out for the whole day.

    b) Some days traffic is much worse than others, which also affects timings.

    c) For a cruise like the GOR either you will make the effort to be at either the Melb meeting point, the Avalon fuel stop, or the Geelong meetup. Anybody who is unlikely to make any of these 3 points is also unlikely to bother to chase us down the GOR. This would be a different issue if it were a cruise around the Dandenongs, but it isn't.

    d) For people who are in need of finiding the group, Kingy usually posts up his mobile number in the GOR Coming events thread.

    e) Sometimes the route is not determined until the day of the cruise depending on weather, traffic and road works. On top of that it is somewhat a secret so that people can enjoy the discovery of the trip - it just adds a new element each time.

Yeah. Good points mate. I probably do think I live in a perfect world sometimes.

OH, YES YES YES this is a fantastic idea, Love It. Have read posts in relation to this idea and the belief there should be one major GOR cruise per year, I dont agree and think there are enough Vic members to support a second GOR.

It was my own fault that I missed last Sunday, I wont be missing the next one. Any ideas when it might be. Thanks Kingy great ideas all of them.

  15. BADZX

    BADZX Grumpy old fart

There WILL continue to be one major cruise along the GOR per year......

The 2nd cruise wont have the complex inland sections to the extent that we have just completed.

The 2nd cruise will also have an entirely new name so there is no confusion between the main run and the 2nd run what so ever...... it has allready been named and that name will be revealed soon enough..... " G. O. R. " is not part of the name although we WILL still travel on the great ocean road.

There are advantages and disadvantages for a 2nd run to consider

    +
It allows those that couldnt attend the GOR to still catchup with friends and still get to the coast with fellow zedders later in the year.
For what ever reason there are members out there that may well not be able to attend either run !!!

    -
There is a distinct posibility that even the "social" groups could well alter to the point where certain members may only attend a specific run and not attend the other.
Beleive it or not but "we" are a complex group, some like the more "spirited" driving style and others perfer the "layback" drive along the coast...... Some of us like the long drive and the breaks send us nuts whilst others like the time to chat with others.
I and no-doubt others wouldnt want a "split social group" situation..... it may cause other issues, posibilities of even effecting the actual forum
    :(

    +
Should a cancelation occour then the 2nd run could posiably become the fallback date for the re-run.

    -
    date issues ....
With the GOR now set as the last Sunday in November, the 2nd runs date becomes somewhat of an issue in that a good time is prior to Easter, this then interfers with other major events allready listed as regulars on the 300zx callendar both nationally and interstate events
Leaving it till after Easter means we again (as on past GOR runs) run with a distinct posibility of bad weather and subsquent cancelation.

Deciding to have a 2nd run and naming it was the easy bit..... ;)

Picking a date that will work not only with the approaching autum but with other major events, and keeping both runs as their own identities, and keeping everyone happy......

    Nexts weeks miracle perhaps.... ;)

Col has nailed it very well with is response.....

I'd just like to add something that few members reallise.

I use several mates & associates that live along the routes we have used in the past, combined, they travel just about the entire run at some stage on the Saturday. These people call me on the Saturday night with updates to the condition of the section they have been down..... the last call I got was just after we left the Ceres meetup point !!!

I rely heavily on the feedback they give me as to potential accident causing sections, police activity, and other issues that may or may not effect the run... an example of this was the diesel spill drama which lead to a GOR cancelation..... & on the run just gone the knowlege of what roads had been effected by the rain, we've all seen ross' driveway pics, imagine trying to turn around 30 ZX's and re routing the run on the fly.....

so saying we are going from A - B - C then to D...... not so easy, especially when an alteration could be made as I pass through Geelong to meet up with the Melb crew.

A few of us took the Z's down to Lorne mid year one night. I really enjoyed it especially the run back . Those corners come up very fast in the dark . Would be a great run with more cars but just have to allow more space between cars , tea in Lorne and a chat is a good break before returning. Traffic is all but non existant at night so no slow cars to get stuck behind.

    Hey mate,

don't get me wrong - I've been on plenty of Holden and Subaru cruises and the GOR is up there with the best 'cause of you and Big Col organising such a great event. It's certainly the most enjoyable group run I've done in at least 5 years!

I just noticed that there were a few moments on the day where cars in the middle or back had lost everyone else and were saying where do we go now? There may also be people who need to meet at alternative points or who are late. It happens.

That's usually solved, on most cruises, by sticking up a route, times and contact numbers. I acknowledge that this is different to GOR so those things may not be possible.

Part of the challenge is organising it through a thread. The detail can get lost in all the posts. Some people don't have internet on the drive to go back and trawl through the posts to find a phone number. One post on the day saying "it's on and here are the contact phone numbers in one place if you get lost or have trouble" would probably fix that. People can print it out or stick it in their phone before they leave the house and we're all good.

    Cheers.

    Night Cruise

Living on thr GOR and driving along it for fifty years both daily and at night the biggest danger at night is not the cars on the road but the ROO`s which come out of the scrub suddenly, main area is between Torquay and Anglesea, most drivers drive in the middle of the road at night to avoid hitting them ???:D:D:D

Which is why we have the whole "keep the car behind you in your rear vision mirror" thing. But people get a bit excited and forget the reason why it's there - so that we all stay together!
