gday, my speedo currently isnt working and after reading the through the tech section i thought id check the solder dots, only now that iv got it out, im not quite sure what im looking for. can anyone clear this up? Thanks
I'd run fresh hot solder to them all... but damn Y1 looks pretty bad... re-solder all the dull looking ones.
Theres your dry joint !! As was suggested find someone to fix this for you. there are a LOT of dodgy looking joints on it. But this one is VERY VERY likely the bad one
Alot of circuit boards are multilayered... you generally cannot tell by looking at a joint if it is a dry joint.. You best bet is to run your soldering iron over every joint...adding solder to those joints that look a bit tired. If you suspect a crack on the tracks on the board, simply jumper some wire across the points.
Correct, the dull grey looking ones are ones with oxidisation that has occured. Normally the boards are sprayed with a lacquer to stop air etc from being in contact with the solder... may be worth respraying after resoldering.
okay, so i went over all of dots and freshened them up. however the speedo still isn't working. What should i be looking for next? I'm going to try get at the speedo sensor, pull it out and test it as described in the manual, but I'm not sure exactly where it is. =/ if anyone could offer a description I'd be grateful. I'm also having a couple of other issue at the moment. The A/T light isn't working, meaning i cant run the diagnostic. I checked the globe while i had the instrument cluster out and it was fine. the fuse (A/T fuse, next to drivers foot) is also okay, so I'm unsure why it isn't working. The other issue is that the 'Shift Lock' fuse is blown, and when i replaced it, it blew again. As i understand it, this indicates a short in the system somewhere? Please note, this is my first car and I'm quite keen to learn how to work on it myself. I am mechanically minded but never really had to work with electronics. So any advice or ideas on these problems would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
