Finally got my zed on the road today which i bought in june.. Had to wait for an rta id check because the compliance plates had come off before i bought it (had them in car) turns out the guy at the rta agreed with me that it didnt need them and i was sent on my way $430 poorer raced back to my local rta (100km round trip only pulled over once) got rego and insurance sorted :br: Only problems the car still seems to have is a whining gearbox 1st 2nd and 3rd gears and a whirring noise when car is in neutral and cluth pedal is out. im suspecting the gearbox is shot. any ideas on prices for rebuilds or new boxes? only other dramas are the paint and a few bits of trim, spare wheel etc still missing but a work in progress. all in all another zed on the road
Mine does the same thing. I've just bought Red Line gearbox oil to go in it as this often fixes this problem (according to previous forum discussions). Worth a try before you start spending big money on a new box. Edit: Also could be the throw out bearing on the clutch mechanism, still have to drop the gearbox off but cheaper to replace as you don't have to open up the gearbox.
yeah i have been reading about the red line stuff, def going to do an oil change asap see how it goes. I will look at the throw out bearing problem but from what i have read around its not much of a problem just an annoying sound?.
This is true rollin, but when the noise is the only symptom and the gearbox has no other problem it's a very good solution. I expect it will function normally for years under these circumstances, deferring a big cost a long way into the future, and in many cases I'm guessing to the next owner.
i get what u mean, but hte noise is caused by failing or worn out bearings, you're right that it can last for quite a while in that state. bu ti wanted to be clear that if the oil does reduce the noise it is only a short term fix. cheers
The exhaust isnt really loud no, only when reved up a bit but yeah not really loud. They didnt check anything like that for the id check, took 5 mins they literally just checked numbers and sent me on my way. At the moment im just going to do the oil change to get me by but i do plan to have the gearbox looked at just not sure when.
wish mine was on the road. seems I am getting old and this really could be a mid life crisis. Hope it all goes well for you cheers Eddy
Cheers, ive been waiting to get mine on the road for a while hehe even though it's a bit rough i still love the look of it. Is there much work you need to do to get it on the road?
Good to know that you've brought another family member on the road, Eddy! Hope to meet you and THE zed soon... Cheers, Arvin

I'd say throw out bearing for sure, plus a contributing factor to the gearbox noise may also be the dust boot around the shifter. That creates a lot of mechanical noise in that area. They are usually in good condition and just need re-attaching to the body. You can easily tell with out disassembly. When the car is well and truly warmed up (inc gearbox), passenger window up, drivers window down an inch (targas on lol), you'll feel a noticeable hot draft coming through between the transmission tunnel and the centre console. The side of the centre console will also get very hot to the touch.
I am waiting on turbos, but mine has hail damage also, not that I care too much about that, I just want it on the road before I am totally bald and this pot gut of mine cant get behind the wheel. forgive me baby jesus and trav for quoting again.
