BOV sucking in air?

    Hi guys,
Just installed a pair of atmospheric blowoff valves on my z32. They are sucking in air at idle and when I stab the throttle in neutral :(
Dont want to drive it cause I dont like the idea of unfiltered air going through my engine. Why are they doing this?
I have played the setting from soft to hard doesnt seem to make much difference?

    Thanks,

    what bovs are they?

Calibre type 1's vent to atmoshere. I understand they are not top of the range but should work.

i know its a silly q but are they connected to the right pipes. do they actually sound when you give it a good rev?

havent rev'd hard or driven it yet, worried that its sucking in dirt etc.
Checked the piping and connections all seems fine, followed the tech artical

my guess is if the vac line is on correctly then the bov is on the wrong hose. can you post a pic?

havent got a pic atm sorry, will post one if I cant get it sorted, i'll try to explain.

Both vaccum lines are attacthed to the standard lines that run to the balance pipe.
The port that is just after the air filter is blocked off, this is where the standard valves recirculated the air to.
The last hose which is between the turbo and the throttle body (boost) is where the BOV's are plumbed into. Sound right?

    Thanks heaps for your help

sounds right. bovs probably got no springs in them lol tighten them up as much as you can.

did you pull them apart? for a looksie. maybe the piston is in the wrong way.

just doing that now, have one apart all looks fine. They are both leaking, perhaps the springs simply to light

    ok.
When I disconect the vaccum line it stops sucking air. Put the vaccum line on it starts again. The valve is not opening it is simply sucking ir past the piston, as if its not sealing internally? very frustrating.

oh i got ya. is there one oring on the piston or two one top and one bottom

It has no rings on the piston. I assume hks etc would have orings?
It relies on a seal between the piston and the outer case of the BOV. Which obviously isnt good enough. Im going to try a light film of grease to see if it seal.

    Thanks

Going by what you have said, I would say that the spring is not tight enough, if the piston was leaking then you think it would do it with the vacuum hose not connected.

The spring is the fine, its holding the piston down. The BOV's are functioning perfect. Ive driven the car are can adjust them from a flutter to an aggresive psst but thats not my problem.

When there is no boost they are sucking air into the BOV from the atmosphere, past the piston and into my motor via the vaccum line. The piston hasnt lifted, its simply not sealing properly. Ive had someone PM me saying that their HKS with orings does the same thing :S This is unexceptable IMO. On a recirc BOV its not such an issue cause the air its sucking in has already been filtered but on atmo BOV's it sucking in unfiltered/unmetered air whenever your not on boost.

Thanks for your help and suggestions everyone. Got anymore ideas cause im all out?

can u see if the piston is in open position or slightly open when u idle? if thats not the case then how have you got them attached? maybe they arent sealed properly in the way you've installed them. does it cause a boost leak when ur on boost? have you got access to some other bovs to testbench it against (from friend, forum member etc). otherwise if the piston is slightly open, take to mech to check their installed proper, otherwise bovs are crap, get t-smart bovs.

    Piston is 100% shut.
    They are installed 100% correct
Boost sits perfectly on 10 PSI, spools quick. BOV's release pressure when I lift off.
I think your right, the BOV's are crap. Yet Ive had people tell me they're HKS BOV's do exactly the same thing.
    Cheers
