alright guys you no that my beast has been a bit of a bucket lately with all the trouble with the atcu and all the stuffing around...well guess what!!!!! MORE ******* TROUBLE!!! i Just got a new job and everything was working sweet and my zed decided that everything was going fine so it was gunna XXX up just to piss me off. I was sitting at the lights after work just waiting for the lights when i looked at my temp gauge and it was alllll the way up and i was like wtf...the my heater started blowing out cold air...then i herd a massive bang and steam came out from under the hood...got out of the traffic and pulled over and my heater hose has completely split in half...great!! my coolant has been leaking and my radiator was completely empty when i checked. Also my fuel comsumption is up the shit..put $30 in it which was about 25L and i got 82k's out of it... im not happy what do u think is causing the shit fuel consumption, why is there nothing in my radiator and why did my heater hose just randomly split??
Not trying to be a smart bum But please tell me you fixed the leak and refilled the coolant before putting fuel in it and driving it away? You will hurt her bad otherwise They usually split because they get old and hard from the elements and from getting hot and then cold all the time. As for fuel consumption. Well you may have done some damage when it got that hot..
Hmm... Doesn't sound too fantastic. Your lack of coolant is either due to the busted hose and it came out there, or another leak somewhere and the high temp and or pressure busted the hose. If the hoses are original then they are about 20 years old now and is a matter of when, not if they will blow. What does your oil look like? No frothy crap anywhere? Poor fuel consumption is generally dead 02 sensors or vac/boost leaks.
I'm no mechanic but have experience at breakdown! Could be a number of things. Thermostat come to mind. Heat sensors too. I think the hose split because it's either old and weak or there's too much pressure due to heat. Looks like it's all leaked out. Is a fan at the front on when you turn the ignition on? Are you a member of the RAC of the like. If not it's a great investment with a Z! There's something a miss with your fuel. I'm sure one of the guru's here will help there. Hang in there, we feel your frustration.
Was the spillage all green? Or was it mocha chino (coffee) in colour? Possibly your thermostat was stuck shut or your radiator was full of shit and the excessive build up of pressure made the hose go pop, subsequently when this happens the release in pressure expels all the radiators coolant. Like a siphon affect. Build up of general operating temps will lead to excessive fuel consumption. But thats an awful amount. Its an NA isnt it? Providing the vent in pressure didnt scare your head gaskets and other relevant gaskets, it will run again. NA's can handle the heat
God dammit! There was no posts when i started typing... Chrispy, you need to go back OS =P you're everywhere tonight! haha.
Haha, I'm at uni tonight working on the thesis. I have to keep running computational fluid dynamics simulations and they take 2minutes to make minor changes then 15mins to run so I have lots of time for whoring
The odd thing about what you just said. Is i know what you're talking about....i should go back to uni...stupid me...anyways, whoring is what you do best Chrispy!
if your engine is not cooked. then maybe you should put a light service kit through it and replace all the water system parts. can check all the connectors
I couldnt i was stuck on the side of the road i couldnt get coolant so i just filled it with water and put electrical tape over the busted hose just to get it home and it was about a 15 min drive and the fuel consumption has been shit since i got the car so it wasnt from tonight. when i actually got to where i stopped there was no spillage of any color...the radiator was completely empty so it mush have been draining while i was driving. Thanks for the help guys
Next time get a tow. Some of the reasons for excess fuel consumption can be located in the tech section. Have you ventured there yet? Here for starters. Based on what I'm reading I'd suggest finding a decent mechanic and leaving the work to them. What's your thesis on?
Ah well in that case as suggested the leaks happened and you've let it drain as you go. Eventually steam is all that is left in the system, pressurized the hose...and pop. Hopefully, really hopefully you havent oh oohed the engine. But that being said, my mum drove dads zed (na) about 40km with no coolant or very very little coolant when a hose tore. She was driving home from work late at night, so she was less than impressed....silly woman. I nearly cried when i saw it in the drive way, steam everywhere, and really really loud ticking sounds. As the engine slowly cooled. Took all night and half the morning before it was cool enough to work on. Came good. Lived for many years after. And still out on the streets...i hope. Best of luck to you.
replace all the coolant lines in and around the engine, flush the entire system and use a quality coolant. your fuel problem will just be a process of elimination and a link has already been pasted
JEEBUS! 40km thats insane! i was worried about the engine in my 95 1.8 lancer as the top hose mount cracked apart, that was driven for maybe 10km, and she said, it smelled funny and was making loud ticking noises...WTF!?!? that was just after i done a head gasket change 3 weeks ago! now its like a new car.LMAO. just change all your hoses in your z32, even the coolant pass through hoses under the plenum's...while your there:rofl: but seriously, i prey for you that, that motor is good, and i would also suspect the thermostat. locked close, pressure build up beyond 150kpa=its gotta go when its gotta blow. OH ALSO, get a new Coolant Temp Sensor, there is a good chance the extra excessive heat may destroy it, this will also have a huge role in how the the fuelling and ignition system operates, they are cheap $52 from memory via Nissan dealer AND DONT USE AFTER MARKET sensors, too many issues with them personally and not worth the hassle. also only use quality expensive coolant, like tectaloy gold or if you mix it, do a slightly stronger mix so there is less chance of corrosion like 60/40 or so with distilled water not tap, dont forget a cleanser as well like loctite muckowt or tectaloy rad clean. Rick.
ill bet you now have a blown head gasket. you should really have a after market temp gauge in your car , the $100 investment can save you big $ down the track
thanks guys for all the help, ill get onto changin all the hoses this week and i had to drive it home i didnt have a choice
a lot of people have been in that position, so don't feel bad. (I would still recommend changing that coolant temp sensor as well) good luck and I hope all goes well! Rick.
You always have a choice a tow truck for $75-100 or a possible engine meltdown and rebuild (~ $5K) from a $20 radiator hose blow-out. I know you didn't feel you didn't have a choice, but its just not worth the risk. Driving a zed with a blown rad hose is russian roulette. These cars will put up with enormous amounts of abuse, but cooling system is not one of them PS: Please do not swear in your posts. it is a breach of forum guidelines.
any news on how this went? i done the head gasket on our lancer about a month ago (due to a common leak near the oil pressure switch, not due to overheating), then a week later the radiator spout cracked and ran dry, so in went a new rad, hoses and thermostat, and last week i had to do the water pump as it blew the seal on the prop shaft from running dry the first time. a costly exercise even if done by yourself the whole lot came to around $700 for the parts, and a weekend lost for eternity to bending over into a engine bay and lying under an engine in the carport. all this was from driving the car with no coolant from a cracked hose mount for a total of 15-20 mins in a 4 cylinder, so i cant imagine how a 6 would cope. i have also had 2 cars at work (volvo mechanic) in the last 6 months where customers have had to pay up big from making the mistake of ignoring the coolant level light on their dash. LOL! post up some results if you have fixed it.will be interesting to know how it went. good luck. Rick.
