Hi guys, I'm trying to get a ballpark figure of what it would cost to respray my gunmetal grey 2+2 to metallic black rose (black with slight maroon) or jet black - would the window /door / exterior seals be alright to take off and re-apply or would I need to purchase new ones as it is after all a 21 year old car

What have you guys paid/ heard of for a good quality respray (2 pak) ?

    Many thanks

Its such an open ended question, so will be hard to answer. Will you be spraying the engine bay as well? With your seals it really depends on their condition and how careful you are when removing them, try not to break any plastic clips and they should be fine. With regards to cost it would probably range from 3k to over 10k. Your best bet would be to take it to a panel shop and ask for some quotes..

budget $5k+ for a colour change I would think, assuming you don't know any sparay painters.
You'd save some money by removing/fitting parts yourself.

I would definately be changing the seals while they're off.

Best advice on repainting a car

Best advice on repainting a car ... use some manufacturers OEM colour (Holden, Ford, Mazda, Toyota, etc) as it will make it a lot easier and cheaper in the long run if due to an accident you have to repaint and repair your car.

I'm getting mine done now but in the same colour, platium mist, not grey lol.
I got quotes ranging from 2k to 10 k. You get what you pay for in the cheapies.
I paid 4k but my panel and paint aren't too bad.
I suggest you go and get a few quotes and while your there check out their work shops for quality of work and organization. If their organized and don't habe crap everywhere you know their work practices are sound.
I waived cash under their noses and got it a lot cheaper.

Do you know what they actually do with the car? For this price do they tape up the windows etc and just spray over the panels? Does the car have to be sanded back first? Does this quote include engine bay and door sills?

I was quoted $4000 to have my exterior resparayed the current colour. No sills or engine bay. This includes minor panel work. I'd say repalce all seals/mouldings while your at it. Probably retint the windows too. Make it look like a brand new car.

Apparently my mob takes the car to pieces, no masking up and no over-spray. Sanded back and then re-sprayed.
You can expect to pay a fair bit more to change the colour due to amount of work involved.
Make sure they use a quality paint too. Don't let them skimp on YOUR materials.

Sounds like my car , blue/black metallic ( dark's black ) with red tint in the clear which in the right light and angle mix's the blue off the base and the red off the clear and turns a deep maroon,

pm me if you want to see the result , im in sydney

also $2500 including removing spoiler, welding holes fitting 2000 front bar , outside paint only , as my car was factory nissan black metallic the difference between old and new in the door areas is slight.

So were you happy with the finished product? Are you saying that it cost you $2500 for a respray? Would you mind putting up the name of the business for anyone else who is interested? Also, how about some photo's of your car?

I didn't like the result on my hatch and many months later it was redone ,the colour match and finish matched the rest off the car,
a lot off painters mix and match themself's so any furture repair can be the same.

We have had a lot off work done over the years on many cars and 1 r32gtr painted the same so the price was good, kind off mate's rates.

Nearly 3 years on and stills shines the same , http://www.aus300zx.com/forum/showthread.php?t=249174

I've had several Z's resprayed in the past (but none recently). The $10k guys aren't always the best & the cheap guys almost always find a reason to hit-you-up-for-more before they'll give you your keys back or they'll do a pretty ordinary job... If you plan to keep the car - INSIST on a REAL 2pak job. If they don't have a professional set-up or don't plan to use a booth - you'll be sorry if it rains while they have your car... about 18mths down the track the paint may start to bubble-up all over the car.... it's happened to me with a car, it's happened to me on a house...
Anyone who says they'll do a good job changing the colour of your engine bay will expect to be paid some good money... but if you go down to your local Autobarn with a paint code, they'll mix it up in a can for you, grab a can of clear coat while you're they, put a whole day aside & you'll be blown away by how good a job you can do of the engine bay yourself provided you're good at taping-up and moving out of the way all the bits that can be moved out of the way (and you'll save yourself probably a grand off the total of the job).
Most Z's rubbers aren't worth removing & then refitting - jump on to conceptzperformance.com & order yourself new ones. Good luck champ!

Agree totally with ZXaddict. The blue HZ GTS on my website cost $13500 to have painted, there were quite a few panel repairs, very little rust repair and the quality is terrible, he has a 2 page list of things wrong in the finish alone, and to top it off it went 18 months over schedule.

Get to know your painter, and have a good look around his workshop at cars he has done, not just the ones he shows you in photos, but have a look at what he has in the yard aswell.

Shop around and choose very carefully, a botched paint job is hard to get fixed.
