    Hello all,
First of all I hope that this is the correct section of the forum. I am considering buying a 1990 300ZX (4 seat and non-turbo model). I thought it would be wise to ask you guys how much does it usually cost to service your 300ZX's and how easy is it to get parts? I was also wondering how many Liters of fuel you get per 100Km and how much insurance you guys normally pay?
    Thanks in advance.

firstly.. fuel isnt the best.. its pretty good but nowhere near as good as other cars.. say commodore/falcon.. but what would you expect from a sports car.

parts are fairly easy to get (service wise/mechanical wise)

cazracing.com.au - supplies most people on the forum..
or if you want a cheaper price and not desperate for the items.. over in the states will get you a better rate..

if you do the service yourself..

plugs (about $5 each if you go copper)
    oil (about $50 a bottle)
    filter ($15)

servicing the zed is the same as any other car.

    so under $100..

you will be getting about 500km per tank (60L)..if its up to scratch (o2 sensors, det sensors, no fuel leaks. etc.)

The first thing you need to do is check out some of the links above. Go through the Tech Section link and you should be able to navigate to Buying a Zed?, what you should know!!!.

The next link to check out is the FAQ.

The other useful link above is Search, questions like fuel economy come up very often.

Normal servicing cost much like any other car but the 100,000km service is expensive (see FAQ for more details).

My TT was getting that from every tank! Things may have changed since with the tune and increased fuel pressure but a stock Z in proper working order should be OK.

I got on average 11.5 to 12 L per 100km from every tank

    Including spirited driving :)

Our NA automatic was averaging around 700km per tank. Mostly highway driving.

My tt gets ~13L/100km, plenty of hooning included. My O2 sensors are shot and he needs a tune. Only late model falcons and commodores beat it in fuel economy which is great for a 20year old car.

Zeds are tough cars - much tougher than their reputation. Check the buyers guide in the tech section and even if youre not so pedantic, but handy with a spanner and instruction manual, you'll be fine

Mate something seriously wrong there... mine needs a tune, needs O2s and i still get better economy than you. No lies - ~13l/100km.

Good Luck Mate and welcome to the Forum.
You'll always find plenty of help on here!
Maybe shout a local Brisbane Zedder a 6 pack of favorite flavor and get him to come and look at it with you.
But like already mentioned, every 100 thousand K's it will need the major service (you can purchase a parts kit for this if you know someone to help you perform it) + make sure the cooling system is in good working order ie... check coolant color, corrosion around water pipes and radiator condition, no cracks around Fan Hub etc.
I've had mine for 4 yrs now and it's been brilliant. (N/A 2+2)

Insurance depends on age, location, modifications, driving history, agreed/market value... I was quoted $4500 for full comp with no previous claims ever - stuff that! 3rd party, fire + theft for me.

tbh I'm not sure there's something "wrong" as such; when I took it to a mechanic who's worked on quite a few Z's for a fix-up, he took it for a spin and said he thought it'd been chipped or something for power output - or, as he put it, "shit mate! what'd you do to it?"

tbh idk but I'd love to find out. feels fast to me

For a car that's had almost 20 years of varied lives, had different walks of exposure to mechanics and climate and even lived in different continents, I don't think it's at all unusual to see people getting great economy (how it came out of factory) to absolutely terrible (how a flogged out poorly maintained 20 yr old sports car should run).

Mine's about 70% towards 'new', though when I bought it it probably went 70% towards 'thrashed to shits'.

Hi instead of a rage on fuel the guy was asking for help... I spent a long time looking for my z before i went ahead, remember your buying an old frame 20 years or less look for the obvious panel repair etc The z is a complicated car and was for its day very advanced in some respects technology that we take for granted now. I would strongly sudjest you take your time and if possible take a z person to help the final choice (offers of money rum and sisters considered) They are a very satisfing car to drive people still look because the shape is timeless Finally and some will dissagree I would not use a tt for day comutes maybee a na they dont generally like very hot days and slow traffic (be warned) Classisc car insurance is available from nrma racv and many others and can save over a thousand dollars a year (my experiance with a quote from AAMI) If you go ahead welcome! come on some events ther are some very smart people in the association and very keen to help

Yeh I have to disagree. I used my TT as a daily for 5 years. It only overheaded once in that time when a hose blow out. It never overheated, even in traffic on hot QLD days. I think a well maintained car should not give you any heating problems but if you neglect it you will have problems. They are not like a Falcon or Commodore that you can drive for years without maintenance and will get away with it. These cars are great if you give them plenty of TLC. My Z also had a big FMIC which people have said can cause over heating.......I never saw it. All the best with your new car, my only advice is get an expert to help you check the car out, it could save you a fortune. I would suggest a good pre-purchase inspection, try Mark Field (zed4life) http://www.aus300zx.com/forum/member.php?u=2181.
