Had a cracked head, from the water gallery plug next to No3 spark plug, so the plug was covered with water and missfiring, as I jiggled the coil pack conector ( #3 and covered with coolant) the engine stopped running. I shorted something out. Trying to restart I kept getting Code 21 start circuit message (Datascan). Have replaced the head ( thanks the guys that helped with getting heads, and Terry from Coorparoo Engineering who overhauled it to the same standard as the old one).
Now I keep getting error code 21. Replaced the PTU ( another S1), have fuel pressure, no spark. Code 21. Looked in the manual EF & EC page 144, shows a 7.5a fuse somewhere in the start circuit, I cant find it, the translation for the fuses in the cab don't seem to show it, and dosn't seem to be under the bonnet. It just felt like i shorted something out when jiggling the coil pack conector because the engine just cut, now I have to find out whats blown.
    Ideas???

You checked to see if the other PTU is good? Done the continuity test on it?

    Plenum earth back on?

Check the 7.5a fuse, bottom row, in drivers footwell.

Could have fried the ign circuit in ECU, try bridging the two closer female terminals of the ign relay in relay box in engine bay. If that works then ECU circuit fried unfortunately.

    Yep, that's a strong possibility.

Mark (z4l), it's winding over, no spark, code 21, these terminals easy to identify? bridge, try to start, what do I expect to happen?

You haven't caused any shorts by jiggling the coilpack connectors, no matter how much coolant there was.

Check your ptu connectors where the wires go in, if they are corroded, replace the connectors and ptu as it is probably fried again. Also check the cas connector for correct tension.

What Mark is suggesting is to bridge/join the terminals. If car starts then it proves ECU is toast.

Thanks, can't find the page in the service manual for checking the PTU, anyone:)

    Ef & EC 179 found it:cool:

Did that, no start, now checking PTU's and wiring:(

That was interesting, close inspection of the PTU connectors shows that they are in very poor condition, couldn't even see two of them, checked with a single male connector , and no contact , so I'm looking for PTU connectors, got two really good ones with the spare PTU I bought, but the wires were cut too close to the connector to solder( like a one blade cut!), so anybody have any ideas on replacements?

I have a pair of s1 connectors here in good condition if you need them.

Who would have thought that while jiggling the coil pack connector the PTU connectors decided not to play any more, I really thought I had fried something there. The PTU connectors were knackered, and that PTU has been sitting under my nose cone for about 5 years! Thanks for the offer on connectors, I'll have to drop in and see you when I'm down that way. I carefully removed the female connectors from one of the spare connectors, they had just enough tail on them to solder onto and replace the stuffed ones on the original connector, fine, awkward and detailed work, but when I connected everything, the car started straight away. I know now that the oil pressure sender unit I bought at Supercrap ($13 suit most Nissans) doesn't work, so I have to clean out my old one and replace that, and I think I may have swapped the two connectors ODS behind the plenum because as the car warmed up I got a really high idle and could hear a solenoid operating and the idle rising and lowering with that solenoid. No 6 injector connector won't lock down, which is strange because I thought it had when I replaced all those connectors about 5 years ago. The steering wheel is one spline out, so the wheel in not "level" so I've got a bit of tyding up to do, tomorrow. Other than that the new head seems to be a success, but I don't know whether I would do it "in car" again, what a pain in the arse:cool:

I remember bypassing the plenum hoses with Blipman on his Z and his PTU decided to fail at the same time lol
