Zed ownership time: 2 months. Breakdowns: 3, technically 4.

Thread one resulted in me needing a S2 PTU. Done and dusted.

    From thread two:
This is thread 3. It features the same problems as thread 2.

I took all information given to me in thread 2 to the mechanic. The car decided to work again on its own and the mechanic could find no fault. he gave it a needed service (plugs, fluid, filters) and let it go.
    all done. all fine.

Broke down 2 days ago. got it towed to the mechanic. He got to it (very busy) a day later. car decided to work again on its own.

I go to pick it up today. it starts. I talk to the mech for a bit, say my goodbyes, get in and it won't start. He checks the plugs, fuel and after a minute straight of cranking and working the throttle it starts. Then starts 5 times in a row first kick.

he says sell it. I agree.

    "deep seeded intermittent electrical problem"

its working sometimes it is not working other times.... obviously its something to do with the electrical side of things.

inspect all of your electrical connectors and replace accordingly... coil pack connectors, injector connectors, cas connector, ptu connectors... whatever is old and never changed CHANGE IT.

on top of that inspect your ptu or change, inspect cas or change, inspect maf or change, inspect fpcu or change.

have u chucked conzult up on this ????

I think the problem is the mechanic. Take it to a real ZED mechanic... Or tech day it up... Or both...

Come to the tech day then on sunday, maybe have someone with a clue have a look over it...

At least get someone to get conzult on it and see if there are any issues the mech has missed (which there obviously are)

Go to the Tech Day & borrow a TPS off somone! This is a longshot as I don't think this would be the cause of the not starting issue??........but your description of the car feeling like it's experiencing power loss & mis-firing but then running fine over 2500rpm sounds like a faulty TPS to me?? ConZult would also soon confirm this if it's giving strange Voltage readings?

Could also be a stuffed Crank Angle Sensor(mine did this several times just after I bought it)had to be towed away 4 times before it was properly diagnosed and replaced. That was 10 yrs ago and it has never happened since.

Has this car had a manuel conversion?

check the block plug to the ECU, if the bolt holding it in has somehow come loose, the plug can expand when warm and contract when cold causing intermittant problems.

    Check your fuel/fpcu relay

    (sorry for shouting) :sorry:

It's a green relay next to the fuse box behind the driver's kick panel

Had some similar issues. loss of power, random non-starting gets worse and worse until i have a non starting z with a flat battery. NRMA was no help.

On the occasions that the car doesn't start, do you hear the fuel pump prime? if not, as someone else mentioned it could be the FPCU, or in my experience it was an old failing relay. $5 fix if so.

just swap it with a known good one (other green relays found in front fuse box in engine bay), see how it goes...

    good luck!

Looks like I'll be hitting up the tech day guys. Let's hope some gurus can take what's been said here and have a look-see.
Not as far as I know.

while your car is running go and shake the connectors one by one and see if the car stops or changes rpm etc

Just a week ago i had a another zed member over and his car wasnt starting. Plugged it up to conzult and it said cas. Shook the plug around and it started. Shook it more it didnt start. Problem found cas connector... So get out there and start shaking :)

Esp if ur connectors are old and brittle chances are a wire is broke of loose connection or even green shit all over the terminals

If nothing comes up on conzult and all connectors are fine i strongly think u should change the fpcu

When you fitted the S2 ptu, did you solder it in or use the adaptor kit that comes with the new PTU? If you used the adaptors, get rid of them and solder the S2 ptu plugs directly to the wiring harness. If you have soldered them, do the following:

Check the AFM connector, make sure the pins are all pushed in fully, tight and clean.
Check the Cas connector for the same.
Check the Coolant Temp Sensor connector for the same.

The most important thing you need to do is find a mechanic with Conzult software to properly diagnose the issue, rather than just blindly guessing what may be happening.

I had similar problems with mine. After replacing the ECU, Spark Module, Battery and everything else it turned out to be a dirty and loose connector on the Spark Module. I was told to clean the connections till they shine , tighten the clips and put some switch grease on them. So far they have worked fine. But theres alway something else to make it stop! this time its the FPCU. I seem to get about 5-6 weeks between breakdowns!

Worked for two days, then wouldn't start to get me home from a party last night. Took someone else's car home, came back today. Still wouldn't start. Got under the bonnet and...
the connections, he means. got it to start - CAS, I think. shooting black smoke. Drove fine for 10 mins, then the engine nearly cut out. it started doing that misfiring thing. gunned it home. sitting outside my house, won't start.
I... don't know how to do any of those things ): I desperately need a guru with conzult.

oh, and got a new symptom for you! once the engine started ****ing up, in neutral while stopped at the lights the revs were going haywire... usually idles at 750-800, it was shooting between 1k and 1.5k randomly...

bam! got it. took it to a mech who's worked on a lot of Z's before (Ray Trombretta, 211 Edgeware Road, Enmore 9519 6042) and that was the first thing he went to. Pulled out the sensor, found a shitload of corrosion in it. Cleared it out, put it back in and it started first go.
Did a compression test while he was at it - ~180 on all :) :) :)

Also asked him for a quote on all 4 discs being rotored and all pads replaced - beat all quotes I've gotten so far. doing that for me tomorrow.

Some Nissan 300zx early models had problems with the crank angle sensor coupling they were machined slightly out of line so check the sensor bearing to see if it has failed. I think there was a recall about the problem years ago in which Nissan had a fix.
