Bought some AMS dumps along with Mani's and now i just got told the dumps dont clear the steering shaft or something. Anyone else have this issue?
Bs, they clear fine. Just be careful when the motor goes in with dumps on, make sure the steering shaft is out the way or it will get pinned between dumps and body. Not enuf room to swing the shaft past the dumps after the motor is mounted. Fell for that trap the other weekend and had to lift the motor up again
Got confirmation the dump should fit fine and they are RHD. The issue is its pressed up against the steering. Dump needs to be modified for better clearance. thanks mike
No they fit fine fullstop. But if they are on the motor when u put it in, u need to make sure that the shaft is out of the way when u drop the motor down. I would not recommend putting the motor in without the dumps-will beuch more difficult to put the dumps on after...
Spoke to my mech and he says that engine is in and so is gearbox etc.. but one of the dump is too close and needs to be heated up and rounded more for better clearance. So FYI on AMS dumps, unless my chasis is bent by 10mm.
i needed 2 heat my sz dumps up and bash a small dent in them... took 10 mins at the most. now i have perfect clearance !!!
Drop the short steering shaft from its spline, drop the engine in with the dumps attached like mike said, I've done it just like that, there is no problem.
Seconded on Magicmike and beaver! you need to pull the steering shaft from the uni-joint before attempting to install the engine again. Then, when in situ, the steering shaft should fit and clear fine. I know there's not that much clearance, but it should fit none the less without modification.
I have fitted mike's ams dumps with the engine a few times now without issue of fouling. Fitted an engine today with SZ dumps without issue aswell.
off topic but can't stop myself asking did you fit the dumps before drop the engine or bolted them after? Greg recommneded to drop the engine first and then fit the SZ dumps.
Definatley fit the dumps first, alot easier to tighten the bolts properly. Just drop the steering shaft out the way to get the engine in.
My AMS dumps touched the steering shaft. There seems to be a roughly even spread of people that have this problem and people that don't. I wonder what it is, maybe new or old engine mounts or something like that? I had to put a small dent in mine like others have said. I'll remember the move the shaft trick for when my engine goes back in. to get it out I had to lift the engine a bit, then remove one of the dumps which was a pain in the ass. Ben
