No need. It is common law that you can't sell something you don't own. Anyway, a Detective Sergeant of the Robbery squad in the family is a pretty good resource, along with my 20+ years as a senior claims officer of an insurance company.

Insurers pay out on stolen cars, and then own them, down to the wheels nuts. If they are found, wherever and whenever, they are confiscated and returned to the insurer. I notice the other day in the media a really sad case of a guy who was suckered on a rebirth of a Land Rover. He was out of pocket by $26,000, and the loss of the car destroyed him financially. The insurer sold it back to him for $1,000 ex gratia. A rare case, but good to see.

Tell your law lecturer I have a fine example of bridgework for sale, one owner, has toll rights, and lets people migrate easily from one side of Sydney Harbour to the other. And I offer this at a very good price in the best of faith - Uberrima Fides even. Gee, all of this legal Latin comes flooding back. :)

That's from the Queenslands Criminal Code... not much use for someone in Victoria which doesn't have a criminal code :p

Try looking at Section 88 of the Crimes Act 1958.
