ok every1.. noob to the forum but been watchin from a far for a fair while and poaching much helpfull tech info from time to time.. and thought it was time to pull my finger out an join to return the favour

so here it starts 91 300zx TT auto..
shat a coolant turbo hose bout a month ago( passenger side if i remember & the b@$t@rd one 2) so over much debate decided instead of finding a small japanese person to squeeze in there i decided to pull the motor out for somewhat of an overhaul (car only done 80k but will do 100k service and valve seals at this time as well)
im sellin my R1 to fund the project as im sick of the never ending money pit just sittin in my garage:(
ok here is a list of what im goin to be doin, some parts i have already others when my bike goes..
gonna be a headache.. 10 cartons of beer.. 50 packets of smokes and a swear jar with more money than the cars worth :bash:

    - engine/gearbox out
    - 100k service from CAZ gates timing belt, nismo thermostat
    - PCV re -route
    - AIV System Removal
    - EGR System Removal
    - all new seals/ vacuum lines/ hoses replaced
    - new valve seals
    - cometic metal head gaskets/ ARP headstuds
    - Hi-Flowed turbos gt28r compressor wheels
    - 2.5" split divorced dump pipes/test pipes/3" resonators(no cats) twin magnaflow muffler w/ dual 4" tips
    - aftermarket oil an tranny coolers
    - Z1 56mm rad
    - SPAL 16" thermo
    - Dual air intake(AFM removed) maybe DOOLZ or similar
    - custom made front mount by (KV's Resto an Race Fabrication) out a friends zed
    - hks SSQVS
    - AMS lightweight pulley set
    - cross drilled slotted rotors front /rear w/ braided lines
    - malpassi risng rate fuel reg
    - one piece custom tailshaft
    - NISMO 550cc injectors
    - WOLF 3D V500 stand alone ECU
    - DYNO TIME!!!!!!!!

its a pretty extensive list, couple of bits left out im sure, engine dress up/ hard pipes ect but ya get the jist of it :D
hoping for around 400rwp on a conservative tune @ 16_18psi
any thoughts on whether it'll make that and any input from evryone on other thing i should do or left out. any1s info or feedback would be great.

anyway thanks evry1 and glad to finally be apart :D

Hmmmm, very tempting to refresh the bottom end as well and give the block a good flush out if your going that far.

Compression readings for current engine ?

    Things i would change.

Stock thermostat, a street car should get to operating temp ASAP
Koyo racing radiator, best fit, quality etc
Forget thermo and pulleys, you need the cash else where that will produce more power, check fan clutch is good.
Maybe stick with stock head gasket (Talf to Eric Drz400y)
The Z1 Gt600r kit isn't much more then hi flowed.
Stick with stock ECU with NIStune, money saved ($1700) will get you some decent 3" dumps and other goodies. The wolf will allow cylinder trim but for the power levels you are going for you shouldn't have any worries with stock NIStune ECU unless your after other features on the Wolf, MAP capability, switchable map power/economy, higher resolution, outputs for NOS/cooler sprays etc etc probably not.

    Add:

    AMS manifolds
    Boost controller

400Hp / 300 rwkw is a good achievable goal that wont require major fuel system upgrades if the stock pump is good.

Unless the 2 piece shaft is giving you trouble i wouldn't worry about the one piece at this stage.

    Just my humble opinion.

    Have fun. :)

EDIT: Maybe shift kit the auto or a HKS ALC

I tend to agree with not going for the electric fan, I've had one on my TT for some time now & tried with a shroud, without a shroud, only shrouded at the top where there's poor air flow & to be honest I have not been happy with the results.
Out on the track with ambient air temps over ~25 degrees C the electric fan juts can't keep the eng cool, even with the Z1/Howe radiator it will still gradually climb out of control.

I have made up one last attempt with the shroud design & if that doesn't work I'm going back to the horrible old windmill but with a more usable shroud that can be removed without removing the rad.

Light weight pulleys are good bang for buck, the mass reduction going to a one piece drive shaft is good for performance & noticeable when driving (go ally if you can afford).

Do the rings & bearings, clean the block (as said by brisz).

Good luck sounds like fun :)

Rebuild the bottem end and install forged pistons. Do it once and do it properly.

    thanks guys
haven decided on thermo or clutch yet, a friend is running a davies craig thermo and had no trouble yet and its queensland summer:eek:
dont particularly wanna completly rebuild the bottom end as i think there pretty good for around 500+ HP AND as the motor on the whole was makin good compresson( 150, 145, 145, 150, 145, 145
    ) i think
putting in the metal gaskets and ARP headstuds in (as i already have them in the garage wit my valve seals) just as precautionary to keep boost inside the engine:D
runnin the one piece tailshaft as got it cheap when my mate got his done for 190(kinda if ya do em both ill give ya good price lol) and all starts to add up in reducin wasted hp
runnin the Wolf cus every1 Knocks them yet i know a few people who work regularly with them and they now do complete plug in adapter( no more f*^kin wit the loom) and they are tuneable in like 150 or 100 increments i think..
the difference in runnin a stand alone ECU was incredible with a good tune an added tuneability
also gonna be needed down the line when i start to run more HP so why im runnin the injectors as the stocks will be comin up to max duty cycle at those hp levels.. the car is my daily and wanted reliability over complete outright ponys.. i think with those mods 400ish is pretty safe with a good tune

    just to add...

will see how gearbox goes with regard to shift kit when i take it to my shop.. also see wat happens if my mate sels his zed as il prob flog the worked box out of it..
ECU is costin me approx 2k and around 500 for dyno time to get it tuned right.. well worth it considering the advantages it posses boost adjustments/duty cycle/ maps etc etc especially when further mods inevetably come along a quick re tune is easy on the dyno

Stock injectors won't do 400hp unfortunately...

    2nd every thing brisz said.

Forget the wolf, the standard ecu with a nistune daughter board will do everything you need now and is easily tuned the same as an aftermarket ecu. There are benefits in using the wolf, additional outputs, map not maf etc but the nistune is excellent value and will save you a couple grand.

My personal prefernece is nissan head gaskets,I would rather a blown head gasket than ablown piston, and the cometics have sealing issues.

At a bare minimum I would replace the main and big end bearings, aswell as allgaskets and seals.

Keep the mods legal - otherwise you'll need to spend heaps on fines, points and getting the thing fixed.
EGR actually IMPROVES mileage and reduces emmissions - it CLOSES under boost anyway
Go with a single factory MAF and rewritten Nissan ECU - I'm able to do you a Nistune package, tuned and fitted at LESS that what you'll spend on fitting the piece of junk wolf, with far superior results.
Put decent injectors in (740's for 400rwhp), malpassi regs are total rubbish(they change fuel pressure from day to day, stick and generally wreak havock).
HKS SSBV's are way overpriced and flow terrible - we can mod the std's not to leak at all and that saves you even more money - keep it recirc to keep the dirt out of the motor and legal (go ask the cops what a fine for vent open BOV's is)
Don't change the crank balancer to ANYTHING without a rubber dampened centre (think ATI) otherwise torsional vibration and harmonics will snap the crank/oil pump - the stock one's good as long as you don't have huge rpm's in mind and the rubber's in tip top condition.
Keep the 2 piece shaft, less vibration issues - doesn't make it any faster and actually less safe.

I'm forever surprised at the poorly invested upgrades that people are always being told to do and eventually realize that Nissan got it right first time round.

nistune is something ill defo be looking into.. just prefer the piece of mind knowing every aspect is tuneable and gettin the most out of..
as for keepin it legal my traffic history would state i couldn give a f**K,
i think alot on here dont particularly care about keeping it legal, kinda defeats the purpose of MODIFIED car... an seriously wat pc plod is gonna pop ya bonnet an say hmm thats removed this isn there.. none.. ya cant see the turbos..intakes under the nose etc etc.. unless ya get a real bas****d or department of transport inpection with a fine tooth comb its never a drama.. BOVs- each to there own ive always ran ssqvs cus i like the sound and any half decent BOV perform pretty much the same
runnin the pulley kit an 1 piece for the reason since we did it to my mates 2 seater there was a good noticeable difference in response/power delivery and been no probs an he drives like he stole it everywhere :bash:
my injectors are the newer style nismo 555cc yellow tops (615cc) an will be more then enough for 400+ rwhp
i got my hands on another long block that will be re built over the next year or so.. this list is to keep my motor goin till then at which point ill pull all my goodies off and put onto the new motor.. i cant afford to rebuild my current motor or have it off the road that long hence the minor overhaul to keep me happy untill my spare motor is built ready to go..
thanks to everyones insight/opinions so far

    WhiteNight Littering and...

Definatly go twin maf with nistune or go mafless with a standalone management.

The newer 555`s are good decent injectors, will be right.

Go newer seals and springs in stock retrics or new bov`s with retric.

Get a lighter crank pully. Never been a problem, heaps of discussion but no evidence to suggest a problem with many thousands being used. Stock pully isnt a harmonic dampner anyhow.

Get a 1 piece, less vibration issues. Makes it faster, doesnt change the safety.

I'm forever surprised at the poorly investigated responces that people are telling other people to do.

"I think alot on here dont particularly care about keeping it legal, kinda defeats the purpose of MODIFIED car"

-Modified doesn't mean ILLEGAL !!! - and wrecks it for everyone else doing it right.

Well, its something along the line of keep it legal - or they will totally blanket any modifications to vehicles. That's why there is rules 'n regulations. Do you like the idea of having to return all your cars to STOCK standard every year for re-registration ??

When a poor modified car owner comes into town the Police/Transport swoop onto it. I get a hell of a lot of work fixing all this rubbish that gets fitted. One guy got 6 defects @ $185 each and lost his licence for a year - He's currently taking legal action againt the particular workshop who RWC'd and did the work. - AND WILL WIN. It's about duty of care .. (Think breathers, screamers, vent to air BOV's and ANY cutting to fit coolers.)

We've got a real bad ass transport dept in this Northern region (which the sunny coast is part of) with a dedicated hoon squad - come see what they've done to the car scene in Hervey or Bundy sometime. NON EXISTANT. Next they're going to be fining the workshops AND individuals performing dodgy work. They've shut several down locally for non compliance to standards (mod plates, RWC's) There's a bunch of cars here without compliance plate now due to such poor quality workmanship.. Just keep it legal or be prepared to loose your car/licence/loads of dosh..

Plus most the time it becomes unreliable pile of crap when half done.

Yeah internet info is full of bad advice, it pays to put careful thought in to what ya believe - with a car like the Z32 it could cost you thousands taking the wrong advice. Just the same it could save you thousands taking the right advice :)

THANK YOU to WHITE NIGHT who obviously understands wat im tryin to achieve an reasons behind mods i have made:thumbup:

as for keepeing it legal i agree to a point but if ya gettin pissy over vent to Atmo BOVS.. exhaust without cats etc or factory emissions crap bein removed dont bother.
i agree with side pipes dumped out by the front quarter are gonna attract attention ect but seriosly most on here have hacked sumat out to fit summat in of some description.. how many people on here removed or modified the front intrusion bar in someform to fit there front mount.. an yeah im well aware of the ( SUPER POPO) that destroyed the car scene on the coast here aswll SCTB (sunshine coast traffic branch/ highway patrol) is 12km from my house:eek: but the tuners dont cause probrems down the main street we f**k off sumwhere to have fun its the noob learner burners new p platers that end up gettin raped by popo (and not all P platers are idiots before someone gets offended lol)
and anyway ill be doin the work on my car myself.. modified yes illegal in some ways yes.. but not gonna end up gettin hammered for

Ok, FYI, the standard BALANCER is a torsional vibration damper - It's got the inertia ring rubber bonded to the crank hub section. I'm looking at one right now. The drive belts HELP absorb vibration by providing rotational resistance with the drive accessories. A pulley would have no such elastomeric bonding.

The short VG crankshaft certainly has less of a problem, but harmonics are still present. More power/revs they grow in amplitute at an astonishing rate. I'm surprised people haven't had flywheel/clutch issues (or have they??) This is based on engineering principles/scientific fact not some dreamed up marketing plan by snake oil salesmen..

Its been researched - ATI developed a damper for L series engines quite a few years back, i tested several types for them, in engines on dynos. FACT. It solved my continuous crankshaft failures period on a 465RWHP L series engine 6 yrs ago.

i understand your view stu along with your experience in automotives
but they wouldn make em if they didn work.. everyone i know runnin either a UDP or a complete pulley set haven had a problem
its back to the UDP or no UDP debate which i aint gettin into..:bash:
ill run 1 untill some1 shows me hard evidence that if ya run a UDP on VG30DETT it turns into a handgrenade[TIS]

Wasn't directed at you in any way, just the guy who had a dig at my comment. What's HIS qualifications, patents etc...??

Fair enough, Who's up for testing to prove the point one way or another. :)

Nissan wouldn't have spent thousands of hours testting and the associated dollars rubber bonding if it wasn't required! Stock dampers for stockers, more suitable parts for modified engines. Agreed ?

Anyway, topic over - This is like a chicken or egg senario..
