Sorry for the weird title, but I thought it might get attention :bash: I just need some help from you experienced zed owners. Posted few weeks back about whether or not height/build would be an issue, when driving a zed, as I was thinking about purchasing a zed. Moving on to today, with previous granny car sold my, my investegating which car to go with is in full swing (I know that sentence sounds stupid, im not retarded i just did standerd english ) Cutting a long story short i was down to choosing between three cars. - 300zx Z32 (1990-1991) NA -MR2 SW20 (1992) NA -Supra Mk4 (1993) NA I then cut out the MR2 as soon as a sat in the drivers seat and tried to close the door ( i got in there eventually). So im down to coincidently the two rival cars (apparently?), the zed or the soup. I just need your advice, opinions, rants, e.t.c about a number of components. All the info below is just what I have gathered after research, and could in fact be quite false, thus why I need your help. Starting with: Price: (these numbers are just an aproximation, and quite frankly probably wrong) Current average sup cost: $14000 Current average zed cost: $10000 Obviously given my budget limit is $12000, I should theoretically be able to get quite a well looked after zed, for the price of the cheapest supra. Win: Zed Maintance costs: Ive been told that due to the engine restrictivness, its neccessary to remove the engine to do alot of the jobs on a zed, this sounds very costly. Ive also heard that zed parts are usually more expensive to obtain than sup parts. Win: Sup Crampiness in the drivers position: (I dont care about anyone else in the car ) I really dont know about this one ive sat in a sup before but never a zed (there are no zeds at dealers near me, and I dont want to bother a person privately selling just so I can see if I fit in ), ive read somewhere that its "apparently" more roomier in a sup than in a zed, but that could just be alot of hogwash (in fact I think that was in the supra forums). Win: No idea Looks: The zed hands down its god damn hot. Just lately ive come to realise that a sup kinda looks like a fish that has been gutted and spread flat on a table. Win : Def zed Theres probably more I wanted to post, but im still suffering from Australia day hangover and forgot what it was, so ill edit it into later. ever tried to drive soup? not easy to get in the bowl and gets all sticky. Clearly its a zed vs supra, your on a zed forum, we are just going to say zeds go to a supra forum and they will say supra.. no offence but what did you expect us to say? lol
if you're buying a NA zed i can't see too many engine pulls happening unless it's a junker within a inch of blowing the head gasket or dodgy rod bearings. the whole gotta pull the engine for everything is more of a TT thing. there's less to go wrong with NAs and they require less maintenance engine wise but the other usual suspects are still there like overheating autos, bushes, suspension, interior, electrical etc. supra, well it's newer and i do think it's still the easier one to service. look around, if you can't find a mint zed then just buy the supra. if you do find ther ight zed which has everything fixed already there's no reason to not buy it. one piece of advice is to buy a damn manual. i've come across plenty of guys with auto zeds NA or TT that's been rebuilt at some time. even well looked after ones have had it done at some stage.
300ZX have more than enough room. $12k should buy a very nice Z, I bought mine for $9000 and its the best car I've ever owned. The engine doesn't always have to come out, usually for things like turbo upgrades it will have to but that being said most other jobs its NOT an engine out job, it is however cramped but its a sports car not a bogan mobile. If its an NA your after they're pretty much bullet proof and I cant think of any engine out jobs you'd encounter with the non-turbo model. NA variant engine bay isn't that tight a squeeze at all.
No I dont mind, im now more partial to Zeds now anyway, thus why posting in the zed forums. I guess I sorta just hoping for some assurances about some of the issues (like with crampiness and maintainance costs)>

NA zeds of 20 years will cost the same as a commodore of 20 years with all the same issues. drove mine for 2 years no question besides a 20yr old box dying but thats standard wear and tear. Infact I would say the biggest issue that has caused the most problems on my zed... is me
i dont think its too cramp in a zed to sit in, maybe if ur a really big fella, but then anything would be bad other then a commo of falcon. go the zed mate, yeh your akways tinkering on them, but if ur likely to become a enthusiast its good cause u enjoy it. and NAs as far as i can tell are fairly reliable providing correct maintenance. i have a TT and its fun as but ull be covered in grease every known again. still love it tho
Well I now own both a 1998 SZ Supra and a 1990 TT ZX. Opinions? Ummmmm, the Supra feels newer... because it is... Handling is pretty much on par. Can't comment on the speed because it's NA vs TT. ZX has a roomier interior. I feel claustrophobic in the Supra (and this is coming from an ex-MR2 driver). I daresay the Supra would be a much more reliable car to own. 2JZ vs VG30DE? I know which one has the better reputation.
And yet theres plenty of 200/300000+km cars on here still going strong. To the OP, honestly what sports car doesn't require maintinence, pick a good one to start with and you should have relatively trouble free motoring. This shouldnt be too hard if you've got 12k to spend btw. Good ones can be had for less then that and keep the leftover cash for a rainy day.
If it's reliabilty you're after then go the supra. I have a TT supra and TT zed and honestly there's not much in it when it comes to interior space. As far as work goes, the supra is obviously much easier to work on with a much less cramped engine bay. Take both for a drive and make a decision based on that. Pretty easy to find either car at importers so just take some for a spin.
$10k for NA i plenty for a good 1. if you are worried about space - i recently sat in my mate's 2+2 and seemed to have less space at the front than my 2+0. but then im only 5'8 ~80kgs so space isnt usually an issue for me.
NA for NA (stock) Supra = faster and let the flaming begin EDIT: I was ALSO going to add the supra is nicer looking.... but I've kind of gone off them looks wise. I now prefer the Z32 for looks BUT ease of upkeep swings the favour BACK to the Supra. Easy as piss to access the engine bay. Almost bullet proof engine. Not without gremlins though so do your research. A few electrical issues to look out for etc etc. At the end of the day, DRIVE both and pick one.
