nut wont come off. not stuck, but spinning in place.

    se theres a nut and bolt im trying to remove. high tensile 17mm I believe.

    I thought I was loosening it, but then noticed ive been ratcheting for a hell of a while. Then I noticed its just spinning on the bolt not travelling up the thread at all. It wont loosen or tighten, just spins freely on the spot.

    I couldnt pull the bolt out with pliers, banging the nut a few times with a hammer didnt help. Neither did throwing spanners or curses at it.


    What else can I do? Is my last resort getting a tiny hacksaw and filing the bolt in half? or using a dremel?

    Any other ideas?

    Get another nut that's the same as the one you're trying to remove. Thread it onto the bolt until it's touching the problematic nut. And either weld the two nuts together or use vice grips to hold the two nuts together. The nut on the good thread will help the problematic nut onto the good thread when you start turning them together. If that makes sense. Also pending on your space constraints.

    Failing that you have to apply lateral tension to the nut whilst turning it so that it will bind onto the good thread.

    17mm fine threads can be a bitch. Especially when they're not cleaned prior to spinning off the nuts ;)

    First question - is the bolt spinning? (Best detected with a spanner, not ratchet as ratchet hides the bolt.)

    If bolt spinning - you need to stop that ;-) Typically spenner on the other part... If tight, can be achieved wedging screwdriver blade against bolt head etc.

    If bolt not spinning, thread stripped where nut is. Try leverage something (like thin screwdriver blade) under nut to apply pressure towards where you want it to go, undo SLOWLY to try catch decent thread.

    no the bolt isnt spinning. i cant lever anything between because its stuck right up against flush.

    i cant weld. ill try vice grips but cant see it working as it wont grip them together laterally, only radially.


    if vice grips do nothing, ima get some nut splitters. thanks for the ideas.

    17mm high tensile sounds like a suspension part... thus, put a spanner on the back of the bolt to stop it turning lol

    theres no nut behind it, the bolt is not turning. its simpler than that :) pure thread issue.


    the nut is........... sigh
    when i put my dogbone brake adapters on (to fit 350z rotors) i did some retarded shit and ended up stripping the threads in the adapters. so instead of using the supplied long bolt, i had to go buy some extra long high tensile bolts and nuts which i used to hold the adapters on (instead of bolt and thread).

    problem is the right side brakes shudder because of this dodgy setup. the nut and bolt arent tight enough. went to tighten, nut spins.

    then i bought some new brake adapters which i will fit like a normal person without stripping their threads. $250 lesson learnt- dont be a retard.

    but now i cant get the spinning nut off to fit the adapters properly.



    point is, theres no extra nut, the bolt is not spinning. but thanks for the suggestions, it seems i have made many dumb mistakes like that in my zedding experience ;)



    just bought that nutsplitter off ebay :) ill tackle it when that arrives, put my new dogbones on normally, throw out the ones ive hacked up, and finally enjoy my ridiculous brakes without severe shudder :)

    if its an ally dogbone you did what vbevan did and pulled the helicoil out

    but if that was the case why wait for the nut splitter, just chop it off with a grinder.

    Oh Josh, learn to read. The bolt isn't spinning, the tread is stripped and the nut has no path

    mmm, i don't think that it worths to buy the proper tap etc, just call a good mechanic/ engine reconditioning shop and ask if they have helicoil for the size that you need, it'd be probably a 10x1.5mm thread :)

    Finally got round to doing this. The eBay nut splitter worked a treat. a welcome addition to the toolbox. Turns out the helicoil on the high tensile nut came off.

    Got some new nuts and bolts. Bad news is the brakes still shudder :( anyone know what else could cause this? Car also seems to pull slightly left under heavy braking.

    Brake shudder is normally a warped brake rotor....have it skimmed or replaced.

    worn front upper control arms can cause braking shudder IIRC

    Just fitted front cammber arms. Do they replace control arms or is that a different part completely?
