I hope so because I bought a set of those cams 15 years ago and now I want to actually put them to use :)

9.8 seems a lot for hydraulic lifters. Most Jap brands go to 9.5mm and then 10+ for solid. I would email JWT for clarification.

Make sure you have your valve stem heights set as part of the head service.

I always thought the R5 was for solids, but the part number you have given says hydraulic on the cam sheet. There is another (RM5) that says solid lifters.

    Correct

    There’s
    400
    400+
    500
    500R

The 500R are 11mm lift. Solid lifter and head work/lobe clearance.

The 500 “apparently work” with hydraulic.

    from the link
    Questions our customers have asked...
Would solid lifters be needed with these cams for high rpm or will the HLA’s be enough? Thanks. Michael.

Response: No the solid lifter cams will be needed for these cams (Link) Nice sentence structure I know.

I believe the M in RM5 referes to mechanical lifter aka solid, without the M hydraulic.

On an unrelated note these cams have +4 degrees advance out of the box and idle like this

If you want a more tuff street idle take the 4 degrees out

R5 mechanicals have a .15 reduced base circle over factory. Be mindful of this because it requires you to either buy thicker shims for the Tomei lifters, sink the valve job or buy long stem valves to take up what the base circle has been changed to.
