As a new 300z t/t owner, I've been following the various dramas of timing belt failures and living in fear of it failing when I've hit 5000rpm! I know the general view seems to be to change it at 100k but buying the car thru the local classifieds, even tho' the speedo shows 82000 k's, I can't be sure the k's are accurate. Apart from replacing it anyway, are there any earlywarning signs that I should look out for (or be listening for) to indicate it might be on the way out? Any advice appecicated
Possibly you could remove the covers and have a look at the condition of the belts. best get it done anyways.
G'day, Wayne. Even though you bought the car locally, your profile details don't indicate whether your car is an Australian-delivered NA 2+2, or an imported 2+0 (NA or TT). Either way, assume the speedo has been "clocked" (I know, it's illegal here in Aus). You're so close to the 100K km point that it's probably good sense to have a full 100K service done anyway. Then you can rest easy knowing the car is safe for the next 100k km you will put on it. I've just had mine done @ 160K km, even though i've put "only" 30,000km on the cars 130,000km since I bought it. The odometer in mine doesn't always work, so who knows what the real Km is. Safer is rarely sorry! Edit: Just reread your post... you indicate a TT. The speedo has almost certainly been wound back, if not here, then before it was shipped from Japan. Do the 100,000km service.
Thx for the responses guys Doug - I'm sure you're right, its just that I've already spent around 2.5k and had the car in the workshop for about 12 days already since I bought it on Jan 25, with new radiator, master and slave cylinders, front tyres, CPU, coil etc. Then again I suppose the cost of an engine rebuild if the timing belt fails is a lot more. Any idea of approx cost? - I have been taking it to a place here in WA that specialises in high performance cars, especially Z's and it would be good to get an indication as to whether they are reasonable. The car is a 91 Fairlady,2 str. Goes well now (fingers crossed)
Which place...I'm always on the look out for new workshops that can work on a zed without complaining about every little thing. Paul
The place is Precise Suspensions and Automotive in Wangarra. Ask for Dave. They've been working up a Z recently - owned by a doctor (who else) that has spent $60k on mods - latest was to increase HP to 690hp - that's some serious grunt
yeah Ive heard of that guy btw, I suggest get your car back and enjoy it for a while. In the meantime save yourself some money and go to www.conceptzperformance.com. Order their 100k kit. When it arrives get it all installed. Much better to be safe than sorry.
By the way - the rego of the car was TTURBO - looks very much like the car in the picture!!! My neighbour's got a ferrari - its a bottomless money pit wouldn't swap it for the z (yet)
Absolutely - and probably lots of demerit points like me. thks for the web site ref - have u had any probs with their delivery? - how does their prices stack up with sourcing thru the repairer?
Hi Wayne - welcome to the community Do as Nathan suggested buy the 100k kit from Coz you'll have no problem with delivery and it will save you money - our dollar is not too bad against the US dollar at the moment. Far better to be safe than sorry. I've seen timing belts that looked perfect - except for the break in the middle!!! Cliff
No delivery problems It usually only takes about 5-7 days for delivery. Usually it gets sent the second day. Dave cant compete with the pricing because Nissan Australia charges so much more than what the US does. You said the plate on this car was TTURBO. Looked like this maybe?:
ZisLuv, do you have the entire article on your car? I wouldn't mind reading it if you don't mind, plz
I just bought the Pommie version of this article in Banzai magazine (UK), and now I understand the earlier references to Franz's burnout pic. Previously I wondered why a pic of Franz doing a burnout in his car would be in an article on Nathan's car! Top stuff by the way .
T Turbo :| Thats the one! sorry about the reference to the doctors - good people really, mostly... any idea of the price for the 100k kit and what it includes?
Don't worry about ZisLuv, he's been mistaken for a Dr a few times before www.conceptzperformance.com Or if you not too sure about buying from the USA then you can buy the kit locally. TTZED
