Before I consider borrowing a gearbox, would anyone have any ideas as to why I can't get reverse? It's a solid hit when trying to get reverse but won't allow me to get it into the gate. I can get all forward gears fine and even 5th hasn't changed. I've checked the check ball valve and that turned out fine though it was a possible issue. Also checked all shifting components and they are ok too. Hoping it's something simple but if it comes down to pulling it apart then that's when I'll swap it over and get someone to pull it down.
have u checked this http://www.conceptzperformance.com/Cart/description.php?II=2546&Car_Type=NIS300&UID= Nissan OEM 300ZX Reverse Checking Assembly Description: If your transmission no longer goes into reverse, check the reverse checking assembly before you conclude you need a new transmission. S
To quote Chili "The problem is 100% likely to be a broken Reverse Gear Detent. This is a very common problem in our manual box(I have had this happen, and know of several others since mine broke). It can be repaired fairly quickly(one day turn-around), and a good fix is to use the Detent from a Nissan Patrol box(it's slightly stronger). The spring-loaded Detent has to move so as to let your selector enter the reverse gear pathway, when it breaks/jams it totally closes off the reverse pathway so that there is no indication of a "gate" entrance.
Interesting, Haven't checked that. That describes my problem perfectly about having no indication of a gate existing. Any pic on where it's located? Assuming it's around the selector box thingy. You've given me new hope. Now to find a way to get to it.
I've found on MT-11 the diagram of the rear of the box has a location that looks like where it'd go. Passenger side, below the selector cover toward the front. http://300zx.co.uk/cgi-bin/manual.c...=11&cycle=off&scale=0&design=default&total=37
32 step 6 is what I checked today. 33 step 14 I'm pretty confident is ok. That's a box out job! Will check the reverse checking assy tomorrow and prey it's fooked! Then give coventry or repco a call.
All sorted...I hope! With the very little space I had to work with, I lowered the gearbox as far as I could without pulling everything out, undid the 10mm bolt holding that little prick in there and proceeded to pry it out. Could only get it all of about 3mm out where it could move freely. Not being able to get it out at all, I tried reverse and what do ya know!!! I pushed the bastard checker back in and tested again, still good. Put everything back together, went for a good hard flog, stopped a few times and can still get it in reverse. I don't know what I did but it's working again as if it was sticking. If it happens again, I'll kick the life out of the car, then I'll get under there and pull the box out!
