I was going to replace my turbo's because of this issue. But now it looks like I'm putting new turbo's on for an upgrade I guess (already have the gt28r's).
Correction One thing 1000/min is 1000/60 = 17 Hz which makes the whole thing much more believable, its like a deep bass note from a subwoofer in the zorst pumping oil past the turbo seal. Balance pipe enables the pulses to equalise before the mufflers. wow good on you mungyZ love your thinking mate.
good thinking my man One thing 1000/min is 1000/60 = 17 Hz which makes the whole thing much more believable, its like a deep bass note from a subwoofer in the zorst pumping oil past the turbo seal. Amazing I gotta admit I was a sceptic on this as I have always heard, taught that the turbo will "chop" the pulses up. But apparently not in all cases, truely an excellent out come. Mungyz, well done. :bow2:
Great news I too have got a smile knowing that I have saved at least one person a whole lot of grief and frustration I can say almost certainly it wont be a fix for every one who has smoke problems but well worth the shot aye
im gonna have to try this.. as my cat back was a single hks type, with 2 inlets into a centre muffler with a big 3.5" outlet, i changed that to x2 2.5" straight pipes with mufflers.. with no balance.. so, i'll give this a try.. if this works i'll be so damn happy.. :bow2: dont know when, but will be within 2 weeks.. any ideas on what i should roughly pay, $50?
I'll be organizing my car to get one fitted very soon. And if it does if it, I've changed my mind about the turbo's I bought, I'll sell them off.
Ha, Yeah that info would have been good about 6 months ago. I had them place the pipe halfway between the cats and the diff. Its nothing exciting but ill take a pic when im under the car this weekend. MAFI. The guy who fitted it quoted $50 - $100 to fit the pipe. I woundn't pay more than that. Mine was $85 in the end and he did it on the car (not removing the exhaust)
Well I got a balance pipe fitted just behind the cats. It has quietened down the drone in the car and after letting it idle for 10+ mins I got no smoke! NO SMOKE!! Hallelujah! Gonna have some GT28r's up for sale.
exhaust I know it is hard to believe but the exhaust can definitely be the culprit. I run twin 3inch straight through - without cats it smokes, with cats it doesn't smoke. I assume it is somthing to do with having a lil back pressure on the turbo seals. Trust me I thought it sounded stupid when I first built the exhaust. It smoked. Then put factory cats on temporarily and it didnt smoke. Gutted the cats - smoked. Put on new cats - no smoke. I dont have any form of balance pipe - but i believe this may help. Also when your valve stem oil seals are stuffed you usually get more smoke as you engine speed rises. Cheers Jason
It still smokes for 10 minutes? That doesn't sound right to me, typical sign of valve stem seals there if it's going away when warm. Once the pressure builds up the seals seat themselves again. That makes perfect sense, without a catalytic converter you're going to show signs of visable exhaust emissions alot more than you normally would with a cat. My money is still on oil leaks of some sort for these smoking issues, and that all the balance pipe is doing is collecting it not really fixing it. There are just too many people out there without balance pipes and no smoking issues.
i read that as he got no smoke at all after letting it idle for over 10 minutes, not he still has smoke for 10 minutes
Worn Valve Stems Jason, the valve stems and seal leaking through out the RPMs is only true for NA engines and really really really worn valve seals on forced induction engines. As the manifold pressure increases it will start to feed back into the cam cover area, and stop/reduce the oil leakage. While Mungyz solution to this problem may work in some cases, it is not a magic fix for all (I am sure he will agree). It appears that the VG30 can set up strong enough pulses in the exhaust system, in some TT engines, to draw oil pass the turbo seals. However, if you have worn seals, piston rings, etc it won't fix those. Also, not all Vg30s need the balance pipe, as shown alot of people on here have separate systems with no effect.
Yea usually I'd smoke after about 2/3 minutes of idling. But I left it idle for 10 minutes and I didn't get 1 wisp of smoke (I was smelling the exhaust too and I didn't get a hint of oil).
change your plugs .. and check what heat range is in it now ,, go back to 6 , and 15/50 oil ........ this should help ...
