How does one go about removing a loose peice of (i assume metal) in my zorst? Is it a matter of unbolting and shaking? There is a rather nasty metal vibration noise and a friend diagnoised as something loose. Hopefully my cat hasnt gutted itself.
First check that it isnt a cat guard or bracket rubbing. If it is still the original system then it is probably overdue for replacement. Spray all bolts and nuts with Inox or equivalent if you plan to try and undo old rusted exhaust fittings. Good luck, you will probably snap more than you undo. Take care undoing the cat temp sensors.
tap the cats with a screwdriver and you will hear if they are collapsing,a rattling sound in the exhaust is just about 100% the cat internals
Its a Stainless Steel Zees system, fitted in Japan, its progressivly getting worse so my bet is on the cats too
Maybe another thing wrong - The metal noise ( like there is bit of metal in a tin rolling around) seems to be coming from below the gearstick (manual). But it happens in neutral just revving to 2 grand. It happens now from 1500 to 4000rpm and stops when boosting. I know the cats are further back and when i tapped them with a screwdriver they didnt make a noise.
You need to get it up on stands and gently rev it to 2K in Neutral so you can locate the noise. It could be the heat shielding from the turbo's resonating, or possibly a blown exaust gasket on the dump pipes. Either that or your gearbox is tossing teeth around. Or perhaps one of the fins from the exhaust wheel. or any other ghastly expensive situations. Get under there and have a listen.
