Hey guys, tough question to ask especially as Pmack is the only one i know to spray pre-compressor but if by chance anyone else has, what size jets are you running or have run? Have heard from as low as 50cc? The plan pretty much is to have it setup and running on E85(already have my fuel system) with 2.5" turbo intakes and 2.5" turbo outlet pipes, so when i go to the drags i can bypass the intercooler and just put a U-pipe to join the turbo outlet to the TB's.(mad breather mods,yo) Not only will this allow me to shorten the charge piping, it will allow larger 2.5" piping and also allow the turbos to make more power than they would normally. So no cooler with pre turbo water injection and 24+PSI for the drags and I/C 15-ish PSI on the street.
Funny you came up with this. Exactly what I was going to do the car I am selling. Was going to keep the NA radiator and run a U bent pipe into the throttle bodies. I spoke to Eric about this and he was overwhelmingly positive. With a 50/50 meth water mix he reckoned 26 PSI would be perfect. I even looked at Snow kits. You need to spend about USD $600 to get the kit with the smart controller to switch the flow on and off. I suggest you may need a level measurer alarm in the bottle as well just in case the water runs out. Pre turbo is no different than pre throttle body in terms of use. The water before turbo method does extend the range of the turbo boost curve longer quite dramatically making it look like a bigger turbo. DO IT
Exactly what i was going for, just to try and push it that little bit further. For street use i can just switch the water off, turn the boost down and re-connect the FMIC. I know of heaps of cars that have run pre-turbo water injection, but they all run big singles, so i was just curious how big the jets should be on a zed and its tiny stock snails. Pretty much get it running well on E85 and then pre turbo water injection to tap the compressor out
Watching this thread for info as well.... in the process of mounting a small turbo to my NJ pajero (work/beach hack) and was thinking of water injection for beach use as opposed to an intercooler so I am really interested in the process you chaps are using.
Just remember, while pre turbo injection will give the greatest benefit it will erode the compressor blades over time. Also the corrosive properties of methanol on aluminium will be a factor on the compressor housing as well. I find it amusing how people are looking at doing this and ditching the intercoolers as when I first did this 5 years ago a lot of people called me crazy. Water injection is by far more superior than a heat exchanger when it comes to producing maximum power. Its the maintenance and limitation of the reservoir that does not make it appealing but as I have found I would never go back.
Go for it results will be interesting. I have just ordered a devils own kit to install on my patrol to keep the egt's down. I was going to install a small jet in front of the turbo and a bigger one in the throttle body.
For some left field non zed related information regarding jet sizes and ratios. Talk to a guy named Barry from Datsport. He's a Datsun/nissan man through and through and what he doesn't know and tested is limited. I've spoken to him on numerous occasions regarding setup ideas and he promotes water injection highly. Pre and or post turbo. More importantly he would be able to guide you fairly accurately on what setup and nozzle choices to go with. Brands, where to buy, what ratios if your mixing, etc. Providing he has an idea of your hardware setup and goals. I won't go into his long life story and why I recommend you talk to him. But he's experience is overwhelming. Let alone the store he runs and the mad cars they create, I would aim to work for him any day of the week. Too bad its on the other end of town. Way way over. Karl's correct also in that over time the comp wheel gets a beating. Nothing like a fine water mist smashing into a 10,000+ rpm wheel. What ever size nozzle you end up, placement in relation to comp opening is important too, you don't want it too far away that its absorbing heat too much pre turbo, nor do you want it not atomising correctly prior to entering the comp housing. So be mindful of it all. Barry did tell me a simple equation go work with, but its lost in my memories some where, if he tells you. Let me know it again GL with the build up.
Already have an e85 fuel system and from asking guys who have run pre turbo... e85 plus pre turbo makes more power than straight water and 98.
I'm sorry but the ethanol will not save the engine if the water injection disappears. If tuned correctly it will be taking advantage of both power sources. Take one away and your tuned conditions will change drastically and also the risk of catastrophic failure. There are cars running e85, no cooler and no water injection that are on over 20psi with stupid high iats and they seem to run fine. Never heard of an engine(e85) failure from high intake temps, e85 masks these issues well. Besides this will only be run like this for the strip. Any jet sizing recommendations?
as 90TTZ said if tuned for E85 and water injection and water runs out it will cause a problem /damage . tuned on E85 alone with no cooler is different again . at high boost and rpm there isn't much room for error. E85 is magic juice and gives you more room for error but you can still destroy your engine with it. .
E85 offers a very large safety margin especially when it comes to IAT's, so if the warning lights go balistic, i can get off the loud pedal quickly and still be ok, with 98 this would be VERY dangerous and would most likely end up with detonation damage(ring lands etc). As said before, the water injection and U-pipes will be for high boost, drag racing only. Rest of the time the car will be sub 18PSI and FMIC reconnected. That safe injection module looks very nice, the wastegate solenoid option with that would be perfect. It could drop boost back to WG pressure if something happens.
