I have a 1-4 PPG helicol PPG dogbox in my 300zx time attack car (UK) and am struggling a bit with it. We don't have much data or history of racing zeds in the UK and none at all of PPG so hoping you guys can help. I've had the box for a while but the gear change is quite erratic particularly 2nd to 3rd. Occasionally it'll pop into 1st rather than 3rd which of course can be a bit interesting. I also like to drag and I'm a bit worried about messing the changes at full chat! Recently at Snetterton the changes improved and I was thinking it was all going so well when the gearstick came off in my hands :) It was just a loose bolt so I thought I'd try and replicate that but no luck still struggling.

this could be part of your problem with split second Dog changes
series 1 box selector gate vs series 2 box selector gate .

I noticed a significant difference in fast shifting when I changed to series 2 gearbox.
series 1 Caused me to miss fast 2nd to 3rd changes on some occasions (but syncros don't help)

Upgrading to helical PPG as well .

You can hit those tangs with a dremel to replicate the series two pattern. Big difference.

I'm guessing the one in the box is the series 2?

I've realised probably not this as I've got a 1999 spec gearbox. We'll still have a look but guess I'll have to see how it goes at the weekend and keep fingers crossed :)

    Dog box issues

    Sounds like worn parts.

Had similar issue with my Holinger dog box, hitting wrong gears, getting unexpected neutrals I thought I was going crazy :D. Replaced the worn parts and shift are smooth all problems gone.

I think they need to be rebuilt every 5000kms depending on how you treat them.

Also some people told me not to use the clutch with the dog box and just slam it through. But shifts are much better and less maintenance if you use the clutch.
