So my high flow kit came with a pair of braided turbo oil feed lines. I installed them with the engine pull/turbos because they look nice. These days I'm wondering... what is the benefit? One required removing the OEM oil pressure sensor, which I know is rubbish anyway. OEM feed lines are hard. Is there any reason braided lines were necessary, other than to attract dickheads (like me)? -A
We think braided lines were what killed Martin's last turbo. Teflon melted within the braid I like the standard hard lines, least you know they aren't going to melt.
I'm pretty sure they can? They are sold with the larger turbo kits as a bit of a gimmic personally . In saying that they do look nice ;p
Don't forget if we're talking about the popular T28 ball bearing based upgrades you must use inline restrictors, which are most commonly incorporated into the braided lines supplied with these kits.
Ball bearing turbos need restrictors -not sure "why" (never looked into it) but all of those kits have restrictors in the oil lines. If you run BB turbos without restrictors you will end up burning oil through the turbo seals
Yes Rob has summed it all up, GT28 ballbearing turbos must have restrictors in the oil feed line, can't remember why the restriction is needed - it was either burning through the seals or washing the bearings. Some GT2560's have the restriction built into the CHRA or cars like the S15 which have those turbos from factor have the restriction built into the hard line.
Hmm, okay good to know, will I be able to see if the restrictors are in the CHRA or is there more to it?
TL;DR, without an oil restrictor on a BB turbo, pressure can be too high, forcing oil out of the turbo seals, creating a leak.
If you look at the top of the CHRA where the oil feed goes in you will see if it has a restrictor built into it or not. I have a Z1 GT2860R kit and the restrictor is separate which is screwed into the CHRA and then the braided line goes onto the restrictor. So CHRA>Restrictor>braided line>oil feed on block.
Going to have to disagree -when my car was first setup they ran it without restrictors and a lot of oil got past the turbo seals. Wasn't good.
