so I know this is a really stupid question but, how can I check if my power steering fluid needs topping up when I look at the master cylinder there's no low or high measurement? (before whinning and groaning start).

You should go to Supercheap Auto and buy some ATF hydraulic fluid. They will pour it in for you

Are you looking at the right thing? The master cylinder is part of the brake system, not power steering.

    Don't use ATF!

    You need Power Steering Fluid.
Perhaps you should download an Owners Manual.

In Canada, all the Zs uses ATF fluid in the power steering reservoir. Unless the Zs down under are different than ours, it should be the same. ATF

In the service manuals, Nissan recommends using ATF fluid instead of PS fluid for your power steering. Wierd but true

When i first got the zed, the previous owner told me that there was a ps leak & to just too it up with ps fluid...so did the local mechanic...however i was told to use atf fluid instead as it was in the service manual by somebody who i cant remember

    Oops!

You are correct, Dexron Type II ATF in both Type A & B power steering systems.

when you ues the term "master cylinder' it becomes confusing.
