whilst driving today maybe after 5mins driving, when the temp gauge would flutter up and down when I'd put my foot down, did it maybe 2 or 3 times and then didnt do it again. wondering if anyone can help with this or has had this happen...?
How high up or down did it move? Do you have another temp gauge so you can tell if it's actually the temp or just a dodgy gauge? The stock temp gauge is pretty useless, but it shouldn't be moving like that.
nah i dont have a spare one unfortunately.... yeh i know the stock ones are shit... i am planning on using my tax money to buy an aftermarket gauge... it dropped from half to 0 fluttered as i reved and returned to half...
Air pockets in your coolant? If the sensor is in air rather than coolant it will read much lower, probably nothing at all. Try bleeding your cooling system.
Sounds like a dodgy temp sensor to me, but I'm not sure really... If I were you, I'd invest in this... CLICKY. One of the best things I've ever purchased for the car, so useful as it does heaps. ECU readouts such as temp, injector information, speed, rpm... Also does fault codes.
i'll add it to the list (much to the gf's dismay) as for air pockets i just topped the coolant up the other week...
Did you bleed the cooling system? Jack the front of the car up slightly, undo the radiator cap and start the car. Make sure to turn on the heater to full blast with the temp at max. Leave it running for a while until it stops blowing bubbles. When I replaced my radiator, I didn't bleed it properly, and the temp shot up. Learnt my lesson.
Could be pockets in the cooling system. Probably a loose connection on the temp sensor though. Easy to break or damage after being handled over the years. One of my old zeds would always drop down to cold upon high rpm's, put it down to more air pushing it back just enough to break the dodgy connection. It's the sensor on the passenger side of the car.
I currently have the heater core bypassed next on the list of things to do... Coolant was put in by the mechanics when I had the injectors changed...
Had the exact same thing happening to me, its just the temp sensor connector is a bit loose and loses and gains signal thats why it flutters up and down. Just go electric tape it so the sensor plug feels firm, thats all i did and hasnt done it since.
