hey everyone just wondering what gear you all use at 60km/h as ive been told that 5th gear at 60 uses more fuel than 4th, is this true....?

depends on rpm and pressure on the loud-pedal.

Depends on the current rpm and pressure on the accelerator.
But cruising in traffic would be 4th or maybe 5th depending on the diff ratio.

What are you on about, 60km/h is still 1st gear:D
Nah, I'm usually in 4th gear cruising or 3rd gear if I'm on a bit of a mission... My driveshaft starts making some noise when I cruise at 60km/h in 5th which leads me to believe my drivetrain is under a bit of load. But 5th should give you better fuel consumption since you're using lower RPMs. Right? lol

Think about it-your can has been designed to do highway speeds of 100km/h. Obviously at this speed you use 5th. What revs is the car doing at this speed in 5th, about 3000? Thats what I use as a guide for all the gears.
    I use 3rd.
    3 - 60
    4 - 80
    5 - 100+
If you gear too high you put to much load on the engine and it has to work really hard at low revs, where there is no power/torque, so you waste fuel. Yes crusing you use less fuel because the revs are lower but as soon as you need to go up a hill or accelerate (ncrease the load) the engine has not got enough torque to do what your asking. So your just pissing fuel down the exhaust. I used to target 3000rpm for general driving.

Sure does if you're on a completely flat road, but aussie roads are f*cking hilly.

Wow whats your LPH at? if you cruise at 3k in every gear :S

when you dont want power its completely fine to sit at =< 2.5, then when you want some down gear...seems like lazy driving to me.

But thats just me, each have our own cars and we do as we wish :)

    matt.

On a flat road there's nothing wrong with 5th. My Z does just under 2000 rpm and doesn't sound like it's labouring at all. I'll drop it to 4th up hills.

I don't advise going up hills in 4th at 60, flat ground cruising is ok

In a TT, NA is fine.

    But really, 2nd FTW!

Depends on the incline. Once again, you gotta listen to your engine. You can get enough warning before your engine starts to work too hard. You should also be able to anticipate what gear you need. It's not that hard.

    Anti 14.7 x 14.7 = 44.1

I change at 3000 in general... 4th at 60. third for hills.

Being an auto, my Zed won't even engage 4th gear at all unless i'm going over 65km/h. At 100km/h i'm sitting at probably 2450 RPM. I turn off overdrive (disable 4th gear) completely if i'm not going above 70km/h, so i usually just cruise the streets in 3rd.

My dad once took my Zed to the city while i had Overdrive turned off... he drove at 110km/h in 3rd, didn't even notice the difference lol.

Depends how your driving ay...when im driving regularly i change between about 2.5k to 3k revs. That means in generally doing 4th gear. Course, if i need to be somewhere i generally shift to second at somewhere around 60kph...

3rd to 5th depending on conditions.
ECU talk can assist you if you want fuel mileage figures.

And, yes, 5th is more economical then 4th even at 60kmph, as long as you are just cruising or at light acceleration.
    The Red Z returns about 6.5 litres/100K at 60 in 5th.
Theoretically I could make it Brisbane to Sydney on one tank, but I doubt I'd make too many friends :br:

You don't have a red zed :p also check to make sure you have the right engine selected, I think you might find it's on sr20 to get those figures...

I'm more interested to know what gear people are in at 80km/h. I almost always use 4th for that, but its just at the cut-off between 4th and 5th. In 5th the exhaust will destroy my brain at 80km/h, but around 90 i'll almost always be in 5th, so I tend to use that as the deciding factor.

3rd at 40, 4th at 60, 5th at 70+ (depends on load). on a tt you're looking at 2000rpm for those shift points. he holds up fine at those low revs.
