Hi Team, Today after work I was driving my daily Zed up the steep hill i go everyday(Toowoomba Range). When I got to the top I noticed blue smoke and pulled over and to check the engine bay.The blue smoke was coming from the rear of the engine at the firewall. It was about centre accross the bay(not to one side)As with being a steep hill?????? Its the first time.
sounds like its a oil leak (blue smoke is the giveaway) leaking on your turbos or NA headers , then burning up and creating smoke.....oil is most likely leaking from the vvt solenoids area
Other possibilities are gearbox oil. Either coming out the breather tube in a manual or dipstick in an auto. Also check your valve covers for a significant leak at the back, going up the hill, forced out especially with shot PCV's. Remember a small amount of oil on an exhaust will give off a f*** load of smoke. No way to say it politely.
Prob something leaking... ...as jinxed suggested. Is the auto playing up at all?... pop the transmission dipstick out and check if the transmission fluid is dark and burnt.
Is there anything around that area that could catch on fire,Im assumingg vvt solenoids is down below rear of plenum?. I can inspect hoses+wiring around and on top of firewall for signs of excess oil, heat. But blue smoke means oil. Should I deem this necessary to buy a fire extinguisher? Im thinking this smoke is a once off.
"where theres smoke theres fire" as the saying goes now thats obviously not true in this case, but it does mean that there is a pretty major leak in that area and all due caution should be taken, so maybe a fire extinguisher would be good just for your piece of mind.....
If you're thinking about installing a fire extinguisher in your car, GET THE RIGHT SORT and secondly MAKE SURE ITS NEW! The last thing you want is to waste precious seconds in the event of a fire, getting it out of the car, only to find that it's not operat... BOOM... ional
I think I will take the car to work again tomorrow and see if it does the same,if it does i will deem it out of action, either way I will be researching what and where vvt solenoids are,and making a inspection from underneath the car.I stuck my head under this afternoon and only noticed the oil leaks that I always have had-mainly originating from the front of engine not rear,I will have to get further in view. From the top all seems well.Wiring and hoses are fine.Transmission has fluid.
could an overfull transmission have pushed transmission fluid out the dipstick tube and onto the dumps? were you filling up your transmission recently and dripped some on the dumps? else; what are the condition of your pcv valves, maybe a buildup in crankcase pressure has blown out the rear main seal?
mine used to smoke goin up hills ,turns out the Power steering was leakin onto the under tray and every time the front of the car was elevated it poured out the back of it onto my exhaust worth a look
Thanks Guys! I havent done a top up recently. Some excellent suggestions to the possiblities and what to watch out for. Today I drove the same route and noticed no smoke at all.I pulled over at various slopes to smell and check, all seemed well.I will keep an eye on it for the remaining 3 days of the week.On the weekend I will examine these areas from underneath.
Even with current (front located oil leaks) it hasn't ever smoked like this before? I know sometimes even front oil leaks can blow to the back of the engine onto the dumps/exhaust pipes and smoke. ... But if it's never done this before and if this is a case of it only ever smoking like that while going up the Tmba range (and i know how steep it is), my money is on tranny oil weaping out the overflow and blowing onto the exhaust. (if this is the case, no probs ) Jack her up and have a look underneith to see where the leaks are coming from, and mainly where it's stained the exhaust to better indicate the leak's originality.
Degreased your engine recently? Could just be some left thats burning up Also happened with Pentron (bolt freeing stuff), just smoked for a few runs then it all burnt up.
I havent cleaned this engine bay with anything since i bought the zed (18 months). Im too scared degreaser will create more problems.Im new too Australia and live on my own....So my Zed,........HAS to keep alive one way or another.
