I have a new tailshaft, just wondering if I need to grease the end that goes into the gearbox? And if so, what type of grease do I need?
I looked through the service manual and it only says to grease the centrebearing (shaft is once piece though so I don't have the centre bearing).
    Thanks

Give it a very light coat of gear oil and put it in.

I put a smear of grease on mine... Can't see it hurting.

That's being slack. ;) The spline is inside the seal, so why would you want grease mixing with your transmission oil?

Well 10 grams of high temp grease in 2.5L of gearbox oil I can't see being a problem. I put the grease on the spline and a very slim coating on the outside. When the shaft goes in it will push excess grease further into the spline on the tailshaft, and out along the outside of the shaft against the seal. No different to the grease that comes on the OEM seals for the diff.

If you have driveshaft grease getting into your gearbox oil via the gearbox seal then .... yep you got it your gearbox seal is foiked and the more likely scenario is that oil will be leaking out. Think about it ... the spline slides in up against a seal on the gearbox output shaft .. why is it there ??? ..to keep the gearbox fluid in ... if thats happening then the grease isn't going to get in now is it

The seal seals the outside of the output yoke not the inside where chris puts it. Nothing to do wih the seal.

So whats people opnions on this? Do people like putting their greasy yolks in oily seals? Or is it more thats a tight seal is required before a yolk will get greasy?

I rekon the best way would be to make sure that the seal is fresh and tight, then thoroughly grease the yolk. Make sure the spline of the yolk is properly lubricated by moving it in and out a little bit to start with before putting it in all the way.

The only advise I can legally give is "Make sure both parties are willing to accept the consequences of such interaction"
