Will the 300zx z32 see any upward motion in price?

Discussion in 'Z Related - Non Technical' started by Central QLD Z, Aug 12, 2017.

Will the iconic Jap cars of the 90s see a rise in price before Autopilot tech replaces humans?

    Evening chaps,

With being a new member here and visiting a few times it's quite clear this place is quite dead, so lets have a chat about something that's been no doubt discussed before such as a resurgence in price of 90's jap iconic cars with the new twist of autopilot tech on the doorstep.

I was just having a light chat with a mate regarding the recent money I'm plugging into the 300 and if it'll be a car that will see any real value any day (his words, not mine. Its worth every penny to me). Now whilst in my opinion only a fool would plug money into something like a car for the sake of a profit later on it did get me thinking.

With Tesla founder Elon Musk talking about having a driverless car traverse from NYC to LA by the end of this year and massive leaps forward in "Autopilot" tech like this: (which was last year i'll add and impressive as hell) it's quite clear that driverless cars are the future, and may not be as far away as many think. It would also seem likely that in many, many years to come, guys like us will end up being restricted to taking our classic petrol human driven cars to the track and keeping off the roads entirely as being human makes us a bloody hazard ha!

So, with all that being said, the question is this: Will the iconic jap cars from the 90's including Nissan's Halo car - the 300 - see an upward trend in value before this autopilot tech overtakes everything or shall the 300 and cars of the era wallow in the pool of underrated and undervalued technical marvels forever more?

    Discussion commence!

P.S. Just noticed I can make a poll, here we go! Since members visit sporadically I'll leave the poll open for 1 month to get a good idea of the general consensus.

Yes for sure we'll see an upward trend also, imo we're just coming into that window now, but it will definitely be dependent on condition/quality. Having said that we're not going to see anything like the increases skylines have enjoyed, they've benefited from race history, movies (f&f) & most importantly the fact they're only just becoming available to the american market.

If you've got a nice zed though & maintain it well I don't think your losing money year on year from this point.

Been discussed many times of course. You can still sell a good example for a good price even now - but it certainly doesn't pay to be in a rush... you have to wait for the right person to come along - and that's usually someone who hasn't owned one before or owned one some time ago. A repairer in Victoria is currently finishing off a paint job / restoration for a customer who is happily paying over $17,000.00 for the job (NO MECHANICAL WORK!). I don't suppose that customer worries himself over the Z owner down the street who's just discovered his rego renewal is due in a few days so he's logged into Gumtree to list his car for sale - MUST SELL BEFORE TUESDAY, yo, make mi un uffa!
I just bought a Z yesterday off a guy who'd owned it for 3 weeks, took it for a cheap service and the mechanic pointed out it had an oil leak and a coolant leak - so this guy simply freaked out and needed it GONE. He insisted he wasn't negotiable since he was already ditching thousands but then he gave in and sold it for almost half his desperado selling price anyway - they're the people holding back Z prices...
All the crappy ones have to vanish (get fixed up or parted out - I'm doing my bit Lol) and then, prices will start to rise overall, but as said, you can still get good money for a good one now.

Latest edition - was going to part it out but have decided to tidy it up instead :)

Anybody who buys a car(with a veiw to making a profit later down the track)would also sink endless funds into a Horse Feather Factory.
On second thought, that Horse Feather Factory could be worth another appraisal.

Lol, bought 2 on this forum for $1400, had both sold in about a week for $7k including parts that came with them.
Bought a 2 seater off this forum for $2500, had a year of fun in it & sold it for $12800. Bought a red one for $5k, sold it for $16800 4mths later. Got another 2 I'm tidying up - just cause I love horse feathers I guess

Once cars reach 30 - 35 years + the prices start to go up. I sold my XU1 for $1800 30 years ago and thought I got a good price. If only I had it in the shed now.

There are a few kits in development by other companies to retrofit existing cars with self driving technology... wonder what it would do for your insurance rates.

Nice reply. I wouldn't say my Z is "nice" yet, the aesthetics inside and out are letting it down a bit, but it is maintained and upgraded well enough. The aesthetics can wait until I've finished with the more essential components!

I hear what your saying and it makes sense, the question is though, will that happen soon enough? How long does everyone expect to be driving around as we are now I wonder? 20, 30, 40, 50 more years ?

    I won't lie, that's a tidy looking Z you've got there.

So we're at around 28 years now with the 89' release, so we're right on the cusp according to you. I for one hope you're right as Zeds like this one: https://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Nissan-300ZX-1990/SSE-AD-4761740/?Cr=2 are an absolute steal with the work done. I believe that Z is advertised here aswell..

Does anyone think the 350's and 370's will capture the imagination the same way the 300 has?

Surely it should push things down?

It's an interesting thought for sure though!

Thank you Central for nice comment on my Z32 your the first one on here to be nice. Yes I can never take it out and park down the street or any where for that matter with out a crowd looking at it or want to take photos .Then when I hop in and the doors go up I get held up again but I don't mind. ;) 100_5609.JPG

My Z had the scissor doors aswell when purchased, alas, they were not done by a competent hand and I had them removed and replaced the hinges back to stock. I did like the aesthetics of the vertical doors, but they just weren't done well and my door has the seatbelts within instead of being located on the pillar so they are bloody heavy doors at the best of times!

Allow me to bestow a "Like" upon your post for your Z having them, and hopefully a better job done with yours than mine :)

Yes they will go up, but relatively speaking, not as much as other hero cars from the era which are enjoying a bit of a price hike as of late: Skyline GTRs, A80 Supras, FC & FD RX7s, S13 and S14 Silvias. S15s are still quite cheap but within 3-4 years they will be going up quickly too.

Five years ago you could have bought an R32 for $10k, factory turbo mk4 supra for $18k, FC for $5k, S13 for a couple of grand and S14 for $5k. They have all either doubled or even tripled. One reason is the fact they just have more overall appeal, easier to work on, better driving feel, parts availability, aftermarket support, motorsport/cult status etc.

Z cars have too niche a following and will always be the lesser in demand models such as Soarers, GTO/3000GTs, A70 Supras etc which aren't really going much and increasing in value much more slowly.

The main problem is maintenance, they're harder to work on, cramped engine bays, more difficult to source parts, no motorsport pedigree etc.

Agree with Mike... There relatively common and don't quite have the appeal of the others. The only zed I'd pay for is an immaculate original unmodified one with less than 50K on it. I think $15k-$20k would be reasonable. Good R32 GTR's are pushing $80k+ at auction and R34's are silly. Even old Mazda Cosmo's are into the several hundred thousand now.
