Barry, I know we don't often see eye to eye...however...
What are you thoughts on my signature quote? From a recent for sale thread that went belly-up...I've not been able to make sense of it yet.

mate, your sig pic is absolutely brilliant, a classic ..... one of the best on the forum, for mine ...

i did see the quote at the time .. it was a balls-ed up effort that turned out to be a great play with words .... from memory it was meant to be something like ... he used provocation(profanity ..??) to cause (???) my assertion ....

anyway, to me it was as funny as all hell .. and is now, thanks to you, in the annals of history ...

none-the-less "hypenated compound" V's "nonetheless" solid compound

None-the-less is now commonly refered to as a soild compound word.
As a solid compound word it's now written as 1 complete word = nonetheless.

The hypenated compound word version can still be used, however, the newer and more accepted version is the solid compound.

This has come about when a solid compound is used as a noun, however, when used as an adjective they become hypenated compound words.

So excuse my questioning, with all respect due, which is the correct spelling for the character "-"
    Hypen
    OR
    Hyphen

I have always spelled it as the latter, but both spellings appear valid?

I stand corrected because the correct spelling should be Hyphen.

Can I use the excuse I was up late watching the Rugby and reading forum postings during ad breaks :)

    Cheers
    Pete

That one is not entirely correct Baz ;)

Voltmeter is a device for measuring the potential difference across two points in a circuit. It measures in Volts.

Voltameter is a device for measuring a quantity of electricity. It's a electrolytic cell and the measurement is made by weighing the element deposited or released at the cathode in a specified time. It measures in Coulombs. And most are from the 1800's :p

    absoletely ....

did you see the excellent segment on 7:30 Report tonight ... brilliant coverage on the bastardisation of the language, including the gross intrusion of meaningless "corporate speak" into everyday speak ....

and one brilliant quote as to why some language purity is relevant ... "speak that i may see thee" ... love that ....!!!
