    good news...

    linky

Im not sure if the link will work but try it...

I took a million pics of my dash and used autodesk recap photo to model them together..

im pretty impressed with the results.
its similar to 123d catch but with this I think I can make a mesh model export file.

If I can get this to model the interior well enough. I can start playing with some ideas..

    What is that file type?
Even if you can import it as a "solid" in inventor, is't not that easy to work with solids...

Couldn't you make the base template out of the clay and or draw that ?
That would give you all you want and it's not that hard...
Top section is piss easy in Inventor.

However if you wanna inbuilt tablets in dash you will loose GPS capabilities...As you receiver will become covered and you won't be able to get any satellite signal....
    Everything else should work...

    Are you sure about that?

You can get an antennae extension cable for most tablets with GPS (especially the USB versions) and some units are able to still pick up even with some cover, so its not all doom and gloom.

Do you want the dimensions for the 10in wide S1080 Gigabyte tablet (the tablet I am using) as it has WIN7 / SSD / Dual Core / Bluetooth/ WAN/ LAN and can be fitted with most devices such as GPS etc. (Note: I use the Bluetooth version of Conzult so there is no cable.)

Let me know if your interested in the dimensions for this, as I would like to mount my tablet into the surround as well (there are buttons on the side - but all are accessible from the front)

    Cheers

    Sure.
can you give me them dimensions.

looking at other tablets, it seems 260mm is the upper end of heights.
Widths are probably about 180 - 190mm max or it would struggle to fit in the surround

The tablet would probably be more upright than the surround so vents or gauges could be in the top of the surround but would be obstructed when the tablet is in place (possibly). This brings the tablet closer to the angle of the driver and reduces glare..

    Thoughts?

I was looking into david 3d, I bought line laser and got a camera, Was real hard to get it setup then when i got it setup the quality was average at best.

The guys you see online are really dedicated and spening big $$ on projectors and that kinda stuff.

    Yeah I know.

There is a david 3d pack with projector, camera, turntable and software. But its just shy of 6k :(

Its not a difficult shape. But im having software issues working with point clouds.

I sat my tablet into my fascia to see how it would fit

its dimensions are 26 cm x 18 cm and it has several plugs and buttons around the edges (including full sized USB port)

didnt realise the tablet was so big, would be a shame to lose the vents, but as Zeo said something like this would be the perfect solution

some kind of adjustable clamping system might be the go, you could grip any tablet that way :)

with photoshop skills this bad - I could be an Ebay 'POWER SELLER'

    Nice...

I was kind of doing the same thing today with pieces of paper cut to the size of various tablets....

working off of an iPad as a base. the dimensions for that were 243 x 190

I caded up a VERY BASIC stereo surround in AutoCAD, and used the iPad dimensions. then did a really shit render of it to see how it might look.

to kind of defeat the whole purpose, I stretched the surround render to fit the image of the dash so its wider than it would actually be.

getting the dimensions of the stereo 'flat' is easy. can measure widths off mine, plus the cutout in the dash.. getting the correct curve of the dash is another thing but I have a few tricks in mind.

this project hasn't defeated me yet -_-

glad you're all seemingly excited about the idea too.

    edit:
one option would be to attach the pad to the back of the surround with clamps.
you won't have access to any buttons on the sides, but any inputs can be easily connected before placing the surround back in.
probably won't work for all tablets, and not ideal if you are using a non dedicated Z tablet and you want to take it with you to use later...

    just an option

if it could sit on that angle, that would be better for reducing glare and would be a better angle for screen visibility...

just means that the surround won't be flat with the dash anymore...
BUT... you could poke a heater vent up behind the tablet at the top...
    maybe?

    thanks Arashi,

    one problem though,
its not an anywhere near accurate 3d model of the fascia.

I had a look, and its just a symmetrical representation of the stereo surround
as we know, the stereo surround has a unique shape which is angled towards the passenger side of the Z.

    appreciate the link though.

    I thought this was interesting...

the Forza model used a lot of components overlayed to make the body of the race 300zx... you can delete all the additional pieces and you are left with a stock looking 300 with a brazillian hatch using a stillen front bar..

the bar was a overlay of a stillen bar and what looked like a stock old style front bar with the intercooler vents..

I doubt its geometrically accurate but this could be a lot of fun to play with :)

    Thank Arashi

The tablet can rotated but its better viewing in panorama than portrait (my opinion)

    Dimensions are height x width x depth (in mm): 16 x 270 x 174 ( = 0.63 x 10.63 x 6.85 in)

buttons are all accessible from the front

quote from a reviewer - (the viewing seems fine to me)

The LCD was usable (barely) in full on bright July sunlight. The viewing angle isn't bad - a bit restrictive on the vertical axis, but about 160 degrees on the horizontal. Overall I can't think of anything inherently *wrong* with this tablet. The only remaining wishes would be #1 slightly higher resolution

Sure thing, but with that stereo insert, you dont even need to scan it... just get a spare from the junk yard and cut out the plastic, then create supports with tin or wood and finally get a mold made of it.

Get a large CNC kit for $2000, modify the Z axis to 10 inches, then create the ultimate mod for the ZX. :) http://i.imgur.com/PEBkBgu.jpg

btw it looks like a couple of these built-in screen dashes have been made for the Zed.

3d printing or injection molding out of china..
they do a lot of prototype components.

The technology is too expensive in the west.

Not if you're 3D printing out of foam and vacuum forming with plastic.

That Forza model seems to cleanup up pretty nicely..

I've turned it into a sketchup model, so I'll tidy it up a bit and upload it onto Sketchup 3DWarehouse if anyone else wants it.

    Anti 14.7 x 14.7 = 44.1

    I do I do

make it good and 3DS max compatible

    Lol... KK

the sketchup model probably won't be high enough quality for a 3ds max model. but you can use the original .obj model and import into autoCAD and then make it a .DWG which could probably go into 3ds Max? I haven't got that far yet...

    still playing with sketchup...

Looks pretty cool with some reflection and lights added :D
