    Hi Forum,

Im just putting up a much forbidden E O I.

Im starting to work out some cool things to do with the zedd and still looking in to options with 3D printing some modified parts including stereo surrounds.

But until I can get up to speed with all that myself id be interested to see if there would be any interest in some modifications that fellow zedders might be interested in.

So far I am considering providing the following:

coilpack and injector wire hidding (eliminate all wires from ontop of the plenum)

version 1 custom stereo surround with 3 gauge pods (including renovation of your stereo surround or custom colouring at extra cost)

Work would have to be carried out in Geelong or items posted that are to be restored/ modified.

Please pm me with any interest

*mods I havent checked guidelines for this section yet so will check tomorrow when I get back to my desk if I have left anything out)

What about a stereo surround that you can fit a 10 inch tablet into :p

    Hmm...

    a 10" tablet.

I'm talking with some friends who are in the 3d printing scene.
my plan is to get 3d imagery of the stereo surround and make a cad file which I can then play with and modify in a few different ways.

I'm keen to sort out a better looking gauge pod setup at the top of the surround which would mean blocking off the central air ducts for the climate control.

just out of curiosity, would you want the tablet to stay there permanently or be able to detach it?

Iv been thinking the same thing for a while.

    DEFINATLY detatchable

3D printing now that sounds expensive
Are we talking about the apple tablet ? As dimension of different brands would vary

Im sure you could have a universal way of connecting the tablet so you could use various sized ones..

3d printing is cheap for those doing it. Expensive if you want to print a single item. quantity is the key if anything like this was going to work. But the technology will become cheaper eventually

Yea, would have to be detachable, I sized up my tablet a while back and thought, if you got rid of the stupid clock you could still fit some slimline vents at the top.

I would actually like to see a permanent large touch screen mounted there instead of a tablet, you could assign the top of the screen to display gauges... in fact there are better ways to display information than using gauges anyway

but yea with something like a 10 inch screen you could have GPS data, Engine management information and audio controls all displayed at once

Before I saw the new Mazda 6 commander system I had the idea of using something like this mounted where the ashtray is to easily control the carputa, the idea being eyes dont have to leave the road

That would be an ideal mod in itself just to get rid of the clock.

    Well that woupd be doable,
if a compact touch screen interface could be put together by a tech wiz which could have gauges, an ecutalk type application, gps and even wifi or internet capabilities then making a surround to accommodate the screen should be the easy part.

It wouldnt be difficult to even reroute the air con ducts to smaller side vents on the surround.

The expensive part would be the prototypes. ie, doing test prints of components to assess accuracy and fit. Then having to tweak cad models until you get the dimensions correct...

Once you have a working cad model then additional mods wouldnt be so much of an issue...

Imagine having an electronic instrument cluster where you can program what gauges you want to show at any given time..

Make the fuel gauge a small bar gauge and you can choose whether the left or right gauges will be water, oil, boost, 02 etc... thats a job for electronics wizards though.

All this sort of stuff would really take the 25 year old z interior to the next level!

this might be a candidate for the embedded screen

    Brightness 420cd/㎡
    Viewing Angle 160°/ 174°(H/V)
Input Signal HDMI, DVI, VGA, AV
    HDMI Mode 480i/p、576i/p、720p、1080i(50/60)、1080p(50/60)

    Nice.

First thing I suppose it to get on to scanning the stereo surround.

I havent used it yet but im keen to try modelling something using FormZ. Its similar to sketchup but the models it produces are way more 3d print friendly.

I printed a model using a sketchup file last time and there were too many problems with the model being 'watertight' for it to print properly.

So if that screen was installed in the surround, what kind of a computer couod you connect it up to? Or would you need to run a mini laptop for that to work?

I had an idea for this last night.

    One question though.
where would the inputs (usb, power, aux etc) for the tablet be?

On the long side or the top/bottom of the tablet?
and I suppose another question would be, would you need access to any buttons or volume control on the side of the tablet?

Those would be the constraints you would have for mounting options for the tablet.

Theres plenty of small pcs out there, wont need a laptop. I found one a while ago that was powered by 12v, had 4USB slots, video out and would automatically turn on when given power (starting the car). It was like 10cm x 10cm too! That what im planning on using for mine down the track.

    Yeah, cool.

Well that sort of thing is definately beyond me. But you guys seem to already have a few ideas in your craniums,

my knowledge is in design, CAD and printing so once I get around to having a good scan ill play around with some ideas that could work with your ideas.

Yea exactly why I think a screen might be better, too many different tablet designs

there are a bunch of Intel or Gigabyte mini PCs running core i5 processors that are quite small ... like these .. perfect for a car PC

Just wondering what you want your carputer to do.

If you just want it to display your car ecu data as guages, graphs and play tunes and a bunch of other stuff that your next phone can do, then you might be better served with a permanent monitor that accepts the HDMI output from your phone.
Plug into the cradle when you get in the car.

Update your phone and software app, but the HDMI connection is still used.

The issue with screens would be the touch screen option. Might be a lot harder and wouldn't really want to have a keyboard knocking around. If you were to go screens check out the Raspberry Pi they are tiny computers you could easily hide behind the dash. If you are clever enough you could wire up a touch pad mouse section hidden in the ashtray section?

If you can run your music and Zed diagnostic apps on your Android or Windows phone, then your suggestion will be the same as mounting the actual phone in the ashtray position and plugging in to the HDMI monitor. The phone becomes the touch pad because the dash console mounted monitor displays the phone screen.

You might not need the carputer but you need an amp to boost the sound from your phone.

Sure and its not a bad idea and would probably suit most people, however I would like to play around with coding a skin for ride runner, running Nissan Data Voice managing a black box system with switchable feeds, GEO fencing and a few other things not possible on a phone.

Yea, KB is a no go and I have a raspberry pi, its fun but lacks power to be much use, I had toyed with the idea of have a few of them networked, really compartmentalise the tasks... also thought of the touch pad idea, spent a while looking for one that is a suitable size, not yet ruled it out as an option, its a good idea... the reason i was going the other way was road safety, you dont want the gizmos in your car distracting you from the reason you are in the car

I think the screen shouldnt be too hard, especially if you find the right size. I was looking at getting something similar to what these guys sell http://bybyte.com/ could even use one of their enclosures to mount the larger screen to, then all you need to the right sized stereo fascia with a row of control buttons along the bottom and you have an OEM looking system

I know what I have in mind is probably a bit different to what most people would like/want in their car so cant imagine itd be a popular item but hey, its an EOI and I have an interest :D
