Hey guys, got my Z shipped from QLD last week and I've been doing a bit of work on it so I can pass the required vehicle inspection! Need advice from WA guys who have had experienced with the pits! :D

Now I've been asking around with my friends and some mechanics about stuff they pick out in the pits... and I've fixed up the most obvious stuff.
    - Had a centre muffler put back in today because the exhaust was WAAAAY too loud :D Now it sounds quite tame and not so demonic :(
    - Also got the driver's seatbelt re-webbed and cleaned out the D-ring thing so it retracts properly again.
    - Took out the sub temporarily because it doesn't have proper bracing...
    - Car is pretty much exactly 10cm from the ground from the lowest point.

Unsure about a few other things though! Are these okay?
    - Bonnet sticks out ~2cm or so on driver's side (bonnet stays closed though)
    - Rear hatch struts need re-gassing so they don't pop up by themselves (they keep the hatch open though)
    - Aftermarket Momo steering wheel (brushed metal finish - no padded centre) what's the deal with steering wheels guys? I've tried to research this on the net with no definite answers. My Z is an 89 model with no airbag.

I was planning to go to PZP first but they were busy today so I went to fix things myself. Planning to go to Welshpool early early tomorrow morning before work. How long does inspection usually take incl. doing the registration and everything? Any other tips/advice guys? I've never done this before so I welcome any advice! :)

    Thanks for reading!

the steering wheel should be fine as 300's dont have airbags :)
the bonnet im not too sure about and the rear hatch i would imagine would not be good lol

Yeah it is kinda dodgy, but it doesn't really affect safety or driveability/controllability/roadworthiness..? :D:confused:
I also just noticed the rear right wheel pokes out a little  (while the left is neatly tucked under the guards with a little neg camber)
Surely this is not to compensate for driver's weight! I'm only 72kg :p But that's not good is it? lol :(

How much does it poke out.

    I took some pics:

A more straight on shot - looks more flush in this pic

    Compared to my left wheel:

(can't even see the wheel if I take a straight-on shot)

I have lost count the amount of times ive been to the pits.

All lights to be working correctly and nothing stupid like green parkers.
Windscreen wipers to work correctly same goes for window squirters (top up the bottle too)
seatbelts need to be working properly.
no after market metal pedals. They have to be rubber and if they are worn, buy new ones.
Battery needs to be clamped in and not rocking about.
    Horn must work.
Number plate light needs to be working
heater fan for front window to work
    windows to work correctly
    needs an immobilizer installed
    Tie rods
    no oil leaks
    no noisy wheel bearings

Ill try remember some more things. Dont want to scare you lol its just things that some nazi inspectors look for. It realy depends on who inspects the car. It took me 2 times to pass my magna, 3 times to pass the VL and my mums falcon passed first time.

Its a bit hit and miss with the inspectors. Ive had ones before that were really fussy, and ones that passed a vehicle with what even I can tell is a dozen defects.

Head up to the Perth inspection pit for your best chance.

But like mentioned, go through the car throughly and make sure everything you see is in top nick.

    :eek::eek:
We have number plate lights? Not on the front though right?
I had an immobiliser installed last Friday so all good there.
Tie rods... are these the tension rods for the wheels?
The muffler place gave the underside of the car a good wipedown so shouldn't be any problems with oil leaks.

I have to check a few things then... probably not a good idea to go to the pits tomorrow  How long does an inspection take usually/how long do you wait? And have you dealt with rego and stuff? I need to show proof of ownership and I've only got a receipt. I can't use the transfer of ownership form cause it can only be filled out if the seller has a WA-issued driver's licence... argh! :(

Sorry for all the questions but they don't really provide much info on this silly process :bash:

    Well, hope I get lucky!!
There's a Perth centre? The dpi website says there's pre-booked examination centres at Kelmscott, Midland, Osborne Park and Warwick! (I have to book like a week away but uni starts then... :() Then there's first-come-first-served examination centres at O'Connor and Welshpool. Is there another?

I think the Perth city pits are closed now. went there a few months ago.

Luckily none of my cars needed to go through pits, because of the 12+ month registered in another state thing.

Unless its closed... But last i went there was about 1.5 years ago. It was a come first/ first served basis.

Oconner and welshpool might give you more troubles. But if the car is in spick span then there shouldnt be a problem.

Ive been done for things like; Reverse lights not working, aftermarket pedals and leaky caster rod bushes. Fair enough prehaps.

Ive gotten away with; Bad engine mounts, No under engine spash guards, no working low beams or dash lights, no aircon or heater/demister, bad suspension bushes. General other things i forget.

Sometimes helps if you can talk the talk a bit and distract the guy from one topic to another. Some will be willing to let something grey pass if you can explain its an easy fix or so / or some will fail it. Like i said, bit hit and miss. But if the car is tops then she`ll be right.

They just give you a written list of what needs to be sorted, if it fails the first inspection, it's no big deal, they fail cars every day :D

Oh hmm well then on second thought maybe I should go tomorrow so I can get a list of things I need to fix :p

Thanks for the useful responses guys! :zlove:

So how long will it take for an inspection, can anyone tell me please? :D

I should add , don't piss them off by having lots of obvious faults or mods, then it just means more work for them and they don't like that, lmao

If its first come first served..
If you get ther before 6am.. mabey 1hr ?
    6-7am.. mabey 2hrs?
    7-9am.. 3-4 hrs?
anything up to 8 hours wait...

My old man works in transport, when he has to register a truck it takes all day. Drives him bonkers.. waiting 6-7 hours in a queue :)

The booking system should eliminate most of the wait.. but i dont know how many days/weeks/months in advance you need to book ?

lol, gotcha. I'm trying to make my car as clean as possible... Even took the sub/amp out for now.

    6-7 hours ouch :(
lol I mean the actual inspection, not the wait! If I do go I'll probably camp out from like 5:30am to get first in line :D

You cant just rock up with the car you need to book it in and you also need a permit ($20) to drive it down. Also, inspection fee is like $80 :(

I hate booking in over the phone as they never answer. Just go down one day and go into the office instead. The inspection takes around 20 ish minutes and they also take it for a spin.

Which one's the East Perth one on the dpi website? Sounds like you guys all know the special pits that the public don't know about :D

Welshpool one is first-come-first-served though, so I'm gonna try for that one. I'll rock up really really really early and if the inspection takes 20mins then if there's only one person there before me then I'm good.. Cause I need to be at work at 10am at Burswood. Crazy yeah but so keen to drive this thing around without PERMITS!!! I've spent like $100 on permits to drive it around and get the car fixed...

OMG Polish you just reminded me I will need another temp moving permit to get it to Welshpool... that means I can't rock up that early cause their phone lines won't be open that early for me to get one :(

    failed miserably guys :D:(

took about 20mins... had a nice chat with the guy, he loves Zeds apparently. Thought it was going well then BAM!

What's up with HIDs?? He says he doesn't have a problem with them but they have to have jet washers and have to be auto-adjusting.
