..Australian rider Andy Caldecott was tragically killed in the Dakar Rally yesterday (last night, our time), at the 250km mark in a long 560 km section in Mauritania.

He died instantly from a broken neck.

How is it, that football thugs get front page news, when they get drunk, or commit socially unaceptable acts, and are still regarded as heroes, cricketers make front page news for sleeping with everybody but his wife, and bringing the sport into disrepute, but are still hero worshiped. Who had ever heard of Andy?

Andy was a quite spoken man from Keith in S.A. He owned a motorcycle dealership. He was probably the best Enduro rider in Australia, and was running 10th outright in the Dakar. Not bad for a 41 year old.

Andy wasnt going to compete this year, due to a lack of funds, but was called into the KTM works team, to replace an injured works rider. He was that good.

Andy was an aquaintance, and my condolonces go to his wife, Tracy and daughter Caitlin.

    Very sad news!
    I echo your sentiments, GT.

I guess the only thing that can be said, is that he lost his life doing something that he obviously enjoyed, and that is a better way to go than many of the alternatives.

I hope that his family & friends can comfort each other, and get through this terrible event.

    RIP Andy Caldecott.

Very tragic end for an unsung Aussie sporting hero. I heard he won a stage a couple of days ago.

    Yeah

I can remember Andy cleaning up in the Aussie enduro titles and again when he switched to the Aus safari.
Andy competing was the only interest in the Dakar for me and tragically, he was killed riding.
I feel for his family back home and cant imagine the shock and grief they feel right now.
Best of luck to them, I only hope they now how many well wishers he truly had. A quiet bloke who proved nice guys can finish first

They actually had a decent piece about him on Triple J news this afternoon. I think its just taken a while for the news to filter over

    RIP Andy Caldecott

On a side note, in regards to how cricketers, and football players are still heroes, regardless of their behaviour off the field, I believe it's because alot of people don't give a shit about off the field antics. They are heroes for what they manage to accomplish on the field.
