Vader's NA - TT conversion

Here is my NA to TT build. It's taken a year to do for a number of reasons:
Lost my job at the start - that means no money to put into it
Started up my own business to make ends meet (which didn't happen - just made me work many hours for no income)
Realised that some things needed (or should have whilst engine is out) to be replaced, so the clock stopped whilst waiting for delivery or the right timing
17 May 2013 backed my 1993 Aus Spec into the Workshop. No known mechanical issues except for a slow PS leak.
Started collecting bits. Intake piping etc.
This was to be a bit of a learning experience for me as prior to now, I didn't know a lot about engines and TT's.

So, now to build her back up

Saw a guy on FB selling a bunch of stuff to fund another car, so snapped a few things up, including these JapTek sidemounts

    Getting some air
    [IMG]
Test fitting Intercoolers. Nissan did exactly as you would hope and put all the holes on all bodies (NA and TT's) and just plugged the NA holes with little plastic bungs.

The differences with the ac setup will be because you have s2 ac in there from factory which is different to the s1 setup. Also, that shifter bracket isn't a good idea, being solid mounted it will put excess stress on the linkage whenever the gearbox moves.

So, how would you fix it then?

A new rubber mount is cheap and should last another 20 years...

    Wow, another big day.
    Chased hunting issue without luck.
    Wired up EBC
    Finished putting interior back together
    Put new shifter boot in
Started gluing up front bar to fix cracks
    Put bonnet on
    Put headlights on
Put front strut bar back on
Did Base idle adjustment (no hunting whilst doing it)
    Bled clutch again
Bled brake lines to all 4 wheels
Swapped wheels over to new set (Black 18's instead of silver 17's)
Found one HID bulb is blown, so have yet to sort that out
Cleaned half of the workshop up

Hunting issue still there, and if I get a chance on Mothers Day, I will swap 2 connectors to see if that's the issue.

    No photo's just yet.

What rob said, best to just get a brand new one from coz, a 20yo. one will break when you're 400km away from home leaving you to hold your shifter up the whole way (ask me how I know this). Also, hope you replaced that orange rtv between the turbo and dumps with a metal gasket otherwise this could cause problems.

I've got a wanted ad for a bracket. $38 is cheap, but postage will be the killer. No, I don't have a metal gasket for those 5 bolt dumps.

If it causes issues, I'll have to sort them at that time.

Hehe there ya go -throw some gaskets in with the bracket to jusitfy the postage cost :D

It's an engine out job to put those in. I hear what you are saying, but can't help but wonder if worth it atm.

Time for engine to come out. Remember, there is nothing wrong with this engine.
Couldn't get Cross-member nuts off at first, but then I worked out the winning combination...

Yep, most of the front stuff comes out. Have to replace Condenser and Radiator. Couldn't find a condenser at this stage.
Hmmm, which Alternator to install? Known good NA one, or an unknown TT one? I'll go with the NA one as they are the same mounting size.
Ordered radiator pipes in blue silicon. What did I get? Black :( Oh well, a quick email, wait a few more days, and the correct one arrives. Seller didn't want the black one back, so score!
What boost controller do I use? Ordered a TurboTech, and quick-as, it arrives in the post.

Ok, so now it's time to fix an issue I found when taking the shifter out. As a lot of people know from first-hand experience, the shifter rubber tends to break.
This can have the result of letting the shifter drop down onto the rotating tailshaft, which obviously wouldn't be a good thing.
I'm good with a welder (well alright, I'm ok), and am not afraid of a little work, so here goes...

I even got to burn out the motor in my Dremel whilst preparing the plenum. Lucky me

Around about this time you may remember we had a lot of rain, right at the end of Autumn. This held me up a bit.
I also learnt how to put an engine in by myself
    [IMG]
All done. A quick wash, and all that's needed is to adjust the clutch.

Meanwhile, I had decided that the stock turbo's had a little too much shaft play (what do you expect for $0?), so I bought a set of 2nd hand GT28's that were going cheap.
I had to do a bit of work after a mate helped me work some magic with new studs (Thanks Ezzupturbo), but after all that, they're on.
I decided to replace the clutch line. Out with the old, in with the new.
(Nobody told me that the line was for a LHD car, but that isn't anything a loop can't fix)
Those of you that play with this stuff all the time may notice the boost sensor in there also. I decided to go with a Gizzmo EBC.
Here's a closer look at the sensor
    [IMG]
    January 2014
I still have the NA compressor and pipes in there. Still gassed up, all ready to go.
    February 2014
I also still have the Auto flywheel on it. That's gotta change.
Ahh crap, how do I get this out?
A couple of phone calls later, and the answer has something to do with a broom handle and grease. Well, apparently.
I couldn't get it out that way, and ended up using:
    MIG Welder
    Slide hammer
    Stud
    1 nut
    [IMG]
It was at this point that I needed to mate the box to the engine. For some reason, I always have trouble doing this.
    March 2014
After a lot of farting about, (thanks Dennis and Rob), it was ready to go in.
For some reason, the passenger side dump was hard to clear everything. Couldn't work out why.
Hmmm Alternator loom is different. Good thing I have a spare on this spare NA engine.
Couldn't get the steering arm to clear the dump. Also, looking at it again, the angle of the dumps doesn't look quite right.
Damn, can't get all the bolts off. All but 1. So...
    Here's the offending bolt
    [IMG]
Swap the dumps over, and back in it goes. Gotta be the fastest engine 'swap' I've done (<1 hour)
Time for some more engine-top work
    [IMG]
    Rocker covers on
    [IMG]
    New Plenum Gasket
    [IMG]
Not 100% happy with the red couplers, but it will have to do for now.
Time to start putting everything else in:
    Compressor
    Condenser
    Radiator
    Piping
    Fan
    Fan shroud
Oh oh - the fan hits the shroud because of the AC piping. I can't leave AC out, not here in WA. Time to figure out what's wrong.
AC piping needs to be changed.
Quick trip (100Km each way) to Beechboro to get pipe work. This is when I learn more bad news. The Aus Spec compressor (and consequently, the piping) is completely different to JDM compressors.
I also find out that I need to order and replace O-Rings before I put things back together. Also got some exhaust wrap (or whatever it's called)
    April 2014
So, whilst I'm waiting for o-rings to arrive, time to replace some plugs.
