I took it back today to see if they will fix it back up. I got a call and I was told after pressure testing etc they are pretty sure that the water pump needs replacing and the job will cost $490 ($170 for the pump + 4.5 hours labour!).

I said I can't get it done this week and bought it home... What do you guys think? Zed4Life? Anyone? :D

Its not a big job, or a difficult one

if you have the right tools, and a spare day.
Save yourself a little money, and give it ago.
If you get in any trouble, people here are usually
only to happy to help out. The price you were
given is a little steep imho.

    Thanks Beaver...

I was thinking about that... I'm still learning about cars and Zeds so I'm still a newbie! I'll see how it goes :)

    just do it! (c)

hehe, this sounds like a fun task. i'm still a newbie but i've become very brave on doing most jobs myself now (looking forward to borrowing some tools and space in doing my rear main seal :zlove:) but i always make sure someone who has experience is there helping me out watching over me.

    good luck

Make sure that they replace water pump with an OEM model

not an aftermarket item, word around the camp fire is the aftermarket ones have a tendency to bugger themselves.

    Oh ok... Thanks guys :)

They say $170 for a Nissan water pump.

Argh! That's over $1,000 for the Zed in the last 10 days

See my PM. Don't let them do another thing... get it over

to Gavin Wood in Labrador or Emmanual @ Amec in Coorparoo.

I hate this sort of shit where they essentially double charge you for work already done (radiator etc)

dude, just dont take it to ultra tune....

take it somewhere who knows zeds inside and out and can work on them blind...

In your state, you have a few options, all much better than Ultratune.

    Cheers

    With all due respect ...

    Nissan OEM w/pump @ $120 Trade/ $150 - $170 Retail not unreasonable.

    Labour = about 3 - 4 hours, depends on hourly rates ???

However, DIY can save $'s. :D

I have to laugh at you guys insisting on OEM water pumps

The problem with the aftermarket pumps was that one version had a cast alloy impeller that disintegrated at high speed.

    Just dont buy that one.

The some other aftermarket ones are just fine.

Bursons have a Japanese made one with pressed steel impeller and casting marks that look identical to the Nissan one for $84.

There is no way I would pay $150 for a Nissan water pump. Thats a rip arse!!

I actually think $450 isnt too bad to replace the pump. Their labour rate would be $80 an hour or so. That is only 3 3/4 hours.

The pump if they are getting OEM would be $150. They probably would take out the radiator as well if they havent done one before. By the time they put new coolant etc in it.

At most its about $50 too much. You all know it isnt like a pump on a Commodore is it.

I have done three of these so far and can do it myself in about 3 hours without pulling the radiator. You gotta cut Ultratune a bit of slack here. They probably havent done one before. I would be covering my butt a little as well if I was them.

    Other aftermarket pumps ...

Have leaked from the seal, had bearing failure etc. Why take the risk for a $35 to $50 saving?

I would agree if it was made in Thailand

    But they are not.

I would venture to say these are the exact same water pump that Nissan buy in a Nissan box.

You cant tell me that this same preferance for OEM water pumps extends to Commodores or Falcons Rob.

There are thousands of pumps purchased every day and only a small proportion of these are OEM. You dont hear of thousands of aftermarket pumps going down and failing do ya.

The water pump is so simple its chances are failing are the same as an OEM one. Specially if it is made in Japan. They dont make crap over there.

Only trouble for most, is how to know the difference

You & I may know, but majority will not. So for the sake of a few dollars safer to recommend OEM.

    I just rang Gavin Wood

A really nice guy too :) He said $500 is probably around the right sorta money for it.

Being not that mechanically knowledgable (yet) I don't know about going the DIY way... Think I'll just splash out the $500?

The only bad thing is said was that getting to the water pump is like opening up a can of worms and things can happen to it even a week after you drive out with it... Tensioners etc...

*sigh* My baby has eaten over $1,000 in 10 days... Lucky I didn't buy that MP3 head unit with my tax return
