Just wondering what you guys do when the rubber or plastic starts peeling off these things, options? Replacements? I'm getting my car touched up all round with some paint and stone chips while in there was going to get them to do this or is it something hell easily done at home? And what are the options?

Some people have plasti-dip them in the past. It's the only way I have seen them done on this forum and seem to come out great.

    Hey

Plasti Dip is more temporary so to speak as it can be peeled off

You can also use plastic vinyl paint which is very similiar but more permanent comes in gloss and matt black

Comes under a variety of brands and names and is used for bumpers etc

See your local hardware or paint shop - works great and many posts have shown the results are great if you search

    Cheers

Do you have to take off the things on the roof to do this? And if so how hard is it to do?

You also have the option of spending a small fortune buying new ones (which is what I did)

In that 300zxclub link in my post, the guy masks the area around them and then sprays it on. Can be taken off fairly easily though as they just clip off.

    See here for steps

If you look through my build thread I redid mine. Removed them, cleaned off old rubber coating with heat gun and razor blade. Few coats of Plasti Dip and they look brand new. Had to buy few new clips due to braking them when removing.

No removel needed- just mask around carefully / rub back with sandpaper so it sticks better and then paint - allow to settle/dry between layers and rub back with fine paper between layers for best finish (two to three coats)
obviously you dont sand the last coat!

Easy to do -little bit fiddly but not hard to do - can be done in a day (you have to wait for coats to dry)

Easy to get pro results and costs around $12 -$20 per can depending on brand (I used the motorway brand in gloss black- is quite good stuff)

You only need one can to do the lot - if you include wipers etc then maybe two cans (it looks so good you can spray everything with it - lol)

So you looked into both options of dip and painting with vinyl paint? How much did that end up costing with the dip?

    Just to add

Once this is done with vinyl paint - it is very difficult to tell the difference between the genuine article and a repainted variant - the only slight difference is that the repainted article looks slightly glossier - but you can always use the matte version if you want it spot on.

I used the gloss version specifically as it actually looks better than the original strip!
I did mine 1 1/2 yrs ago and they still look new!

Take your time and do it properly for less than $20!

Aren't the moldings made of something else also by the looks of the install / uninstall links provided above, looks like that stuff when the other stuff is rotting away

Like rubberised or something I meant (but a different material) to keep the water out? Or are they purely aesthetic?

Are you talking about the weather strips still?
Not sure what links your talking about - there are plenty of links available, I did one before myself on the renewal of the strips and I think offhand it shows the strips before they are renewed

The external top mouldings are just chromed metal strips with a plastic coating on top!

    The cowls are all plastic
The window weather strips are a pliable plastic type of rubber construction
