:zlove:I need help with my starter motor as it is clashing with the flywheel when i try too start the car.I have herd their is a nissan fix for this can anyone help me with this.I all so herd it is a common problem on the 300ZX Z32.
By the way the ring gear seems to be ok as i thought that could be the problem.I has got worse since i have put a brand new battery in.:(

I've never had nor heard of this problem you speak of. You may have a worn ring gear or starter motor pinion. Pull the starter off and have a look at the teeth on both.

Make sure neither of the bolts holding it in have loosened???

My starter has done this since new- and I bought a 'new' reco bosch unit.
Starter motor mounting bolts probably not the problem, unless REALLY loose- the starter mount is the non-adjustable type.

Its annoying, but I get around it by pumping the clutch a bit while selecting a few different gears to shift the flywheel a bit before starting. If all else fails, put it in gear and let the car roll a bit. My problem may be due to a aftermarket light weight flywheel, which I hear is a non servicable unit (chromolly, uses machined ring gear, not removable )

It's been mentioned at least a dozen times on this forum. Lower bolt thread is notoriously soft and easily stripped if over tightened, or loose if under tightened.

Wouldn't say it's a common problem, but it's certainly not a brand new one.

Failure of the starter to mesh properly is usually worn teeth on either the starter pinion or the flywheel, or both. Remove the starter and check the teeth. Also check that the pinion spins down the shaft freely. A sticky pinion on shaft can delay the engagement of the pinion with the flywheel and cause the teeth to skip across each other. The engine tends to stop in the same place most times and so the teeth on the flywheel can wear in the one spot. One solution is to rotate the flywheel to a different spot but this is only worthwhile if the engine or gearbox is already out and wear is obviously only in the one place. First check the starter and have it serviced or replaced.

Probably the solenoid that pushes the motor against the ring gear is knackered. I was driving a zed that was doing the same thing. I got around it by turning the car to on waiting a few seconds then starting rather than turning the key right round to start straight away. Using this method I avoided teeth gnashing 95% of the time.

My car does this, or did I should say before the engine blew.
I'm having the teeth welded and re-machined on my flywheel as it's a single piece item.

I also disassembled and cleaned/lubed the starter to try to fix any delay with throwout like previously mentioned. Didn't really help i'm afraid as the flywheel teeth are too far gone. Although they don't visually look too bad so worth double checking on yours.

FYI, you can but a new stock ring gear from the US, Z1motorsports.com I think has them. It's about $90 odd from memory, but still might be cheaper in the long run to get a good used one from a forum member.

Good luck with it anyway, it's an embarrasing pain in the ass I know ;)
