I have recently replaced ALL the belts on my TT. After numerous unsuccessful attempts to stop these belts from screeching, I have once again tightened these belts to a point at which there is virtually zero "free-play" on any of them(much tighter than recommended in the WSM). They continue to "screech" for around 10-15 seconds each time the car is started from a "cold" start". ALL belts and pulleys are clean and free from any contaminants(this has never occurred at any time during the many years that I have owned this car). Never had this problem during 55yrs of car ownership.
Put a bolt meter on your battery. I've had it before with overcharging alternators. They load the belt up so much it doesn't matter how tight the belt is. It will slip
Went back and had another look at the Power Steering belt(the only belt that seemed to be overly tight). Gave it another couple of turns(against my better judgement)and "Viola" NO MORE SCREECHING!!!! My next job will be to replace it, when it snaps(because of being over-tensioned).:br:
Or kill the alternator bearings........ Belt tension should be strictly as per the manual rather than too tight or too loose New belts can be helped to settle in using some soapy water (old mechanic trick). You will have to keep checking the belt deflection over a short period until the belts are worn in. Belt Grip can also help eliminate squeal but should only be used on new belts (old ones will snap under the sudden grip/ pressure) Nothing Chili can't handle
Have you got an alloy under drive pulley fitted? I've found that the smooth alloy on under drive pulleys require more tension to grip and even the the problem comes back every few months as the belt stretches.
I think you might be on the right track. I have some AMS Alloy pulleys(P/S, Alt & W/Pump). I took the C/shaft one off because it seemed to be exacerbating the problem earlier on(but then the issue re-appeared on the P/S belt). Does Belt Grip have to be applied by hand(or is it an aerosol spray can)?
I'd recommend against using belt grip, products like that are only a temporary fix at best. Maybe try to rough up the ridges on the pulleys so the belts have something decent to grab on to.
Wax works well. Grab a candle and apply a little wax to the belts. Just lightly touch a plain candle to the edges of the belts while idling. Of course, be VERY careful. :zlove: A crayon also works.
Have I missed something big or is there a reason not to simply refit the OEM pulleys...? WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH THE REAL LLOYD?!?!
Ive got a gfb underdrive pulley and it squeals sometimes, ive tried the spray can belt grip once and it didn't really help much. I just give it a decent rev to get rid of it
Yes you are right here. My underdrive set was squealing every time I started the car. A quit squirt of "Belt Dressing" helped to find the noisy belt.
Because re-fitting the "OEM pulleys" requires removing(and discarding) the new pulleys AND the new belts AND then purchasing new replacements for all of these items...PLUS... taking a Taxi to get to a store that sells these items.:br: PS. The REAL LLOYD is out in the garage setting-up a noose & foot-stool prior to using same(at the first convenient moment).
Spray water on the ribbed side of the belt while the engine is running at idle speed. If the noise level increases immediately & returns to the starting level, the problem is under-tensioning. If the noise goes away for a few seconds & then returns, the cause is misalignment. [yt]fPjmBQc2gGQ[/yt]
AND....If the noise goes away completely(and does not return)you have just successfully applied some CRC Fanbelt Conditioner. TISH BOOM!!!:zlove::br:
