See that I'm doing a '2000 spec' tailight conversion I thought I might as well do the centre panel '300zx' allumination. Now I've looked in the 'Tech Section' but can only seem to find (1) aspect of suggestion of allumination.I will probably go with a 'Led' allumination in the end but would like your input on the matter.Have any members done a successful transition on this project? Any info & photos if possible, would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Grahame.
Hey mate, remember me??? I thought we had an in depth discussion on the best way to achieve what you are trying to do? Don't tell me your suffering "Old Timers Disease" too.
Who are you again??? Yes we did Lloyd, but as in all projects I undertake I like to broaden my options by looking at other ideas & alternatives, even though, depending on the response I get from "thread", I may still go with what we discussed. :zlove: :zlove:
thought that there was a comprehensive thread on this about 12 months ago ..?? .. don't know that it covered leds, tho' ...
I did my rear panel with leds, got the notion after I did the cluster conversion. I drilled six holes in the back off the panel, fitted six 3mm leds in series with one resistor, then hooked it up to a 12v battery, and turned it on in a dark room. (I separated the panel first, painted and sanded as per normal) Leds just don?t light the 300zx up anywhere as good as the el wire or the el panel, and is not worth it imo. El panel is the way to go.
I did try to get the EL panel but the places I rang, ( Dick Smith/Jay Jay's etc etc..) didn't know what I was talking about. I even took a photo of one.So if I decide to go this way where can I obtain one. Cheers Grahame.
yeh would like to know where you got the EL tape and how to connect etc....i heard you had to paint the back except the letters as the light goes through the standard black...is that true......a new tech on this would be good...ie with el tape
It came from the "electroluminescent" Co in Australia. You just specify a length, I think mine was 11 inches (I don't mean to boast ), and they provide an inverter to suit the length. Many colours are available. The light tape comes with two connectors on one end, since the inverter produces an AC current, it doesn't matter which way around you connect the terminals. Then you just wire into a suitable 12VDC feed, I used the tail light illumination wiring. Deadset simple. Cost was about $90 shipped (I think from Melbourne)
How loud is the inverter? I heard this on someones car on a cruise and the noise would piss me off. Any other way to do it aside from using a loud buzzing inverter?
Send an email to info@electroluminescent.net.au With regard to noise, I can't hear mine at all. Having said that, it is mounted right at the back of the vehicle. But even when I am standing over it, with the headlights on, I can't hear it. If I sit the inverter on the amp, it hums through the stereo, but I guess one would expect that to happen
Group buy anyone?.....Ive never done one so would be great for someone to overtake me on this one but im sure we will get like 10-20 bucks off with a GB......Ill make a new thread on a GB interest in like 1-2 days after i get in contact with these guys....... keep your eyes peeled but would be great for some one to continue the GB for me as i never have done one and not very keen on handleing other plpz money......
GB is underway....check the GB section for a thread called EL tape etc...... need many plpz for this one to get a good price.........express your interest asap
Thanks gentlemen for your replies, they were greatly appreciated.I got the response I was hoping for. This is such a great forum, the moment a 'thread' is lodged,in most cases, you get a great response. I suppose you'll all blame me now for dipping into the bottomless money pit for a another 'have to have' group buy. :zlove: :zlove: Well done & thanks again. Cheers Grahame.
There's an existing write up rob. I've done it twice, its really straight forward. the only slightly difficult part is separating the panel. Id never put it in an oven, heat gun is the answer.
