That is the US spec, not sure on the differences but if I was to take an educated guess I'd say the Z32 part number is to suit the Bose tape deck. Not sure on compatibility but Aus and Japan got different units. Japan in the later years got a variety of different dealer-fit head unit options as most spec were being sent to dealers in 'audioless' configuration (since it was common to fit aftermarket units with TV or Navigation at the time). You also need to consider variances in countries between units, for example a Japanese head unit will require an adapter to work with Australian radio as their frequencies are different to hours. In all honesty, most 90's stereos weren't very good by todays standards and the factory Clarion system that Australia got had fairly average anti-skip technology in the CD player. And people lament the factory fit Bose systems in the US and Japan for their average audio quality and lack of reliability. There's no harm holding on to the original tape deck and fitting a tidy aftermarket unit with carplay to enjoy the current day mod-cons. There are some good quality double din fascias on the market for this exact purpose.
My current setup for my Z is using a factory optional Clarion single din Flip out screen which is connected to a factory optional Xanavi Radio & Mini Disc player. The benefit with the clarion tv screen for me is it has a aux audio port on the front of the unit which I have been using to connect a bluetooth device with an aux cable to allow me to listen to music from my phone via amusic app or youtube which is really convient and I hope to one day connect a reversing camera to the video RCA connector on the back of the unit so I can have a functional rear view camera setup one day. P/N: B8070-C9949 P/N: B8191-C9912 Unfortunately after going through all of my photo archives, I only have a couple of different types of optional factory cd players I am interested in selling. Including a kenwood player and a xanavi 4-disc CD stacker. I also have a factory clarion 4inch flip out tv screen as well which is brand new in the box but I dont think I have any stereos with radio functionality in my collection atm and if I did i don't know where they are at this point in time in my massive pile of spare 300zx parts. Anyways the kenwood player was featured in the 97 brochure and has a cool 90's style illuminated panel when in operation. It requires a adatptor harness which I should have to be able to plug it into a factory radio unit but I need to check before I can comfirm that. without the adaptor harness there is no way to connect the player up. P/N: B8182-89980 Next I have a pair of xanavi 4-disc cd stacker players which are in a single din format. From memory both of these players had problems with them dirtying the CD with some sort of grease which would prevent the CD from playing after a while. I think both units need to be pulled apart and serviced or at least cleaned internally. P/N: B8182-89910 I picked up a brand new never been used optional 4inch Clarion factory flip out screen years ago from yahoo auctions which was purchased before I got the later model B8070-C9949 tv screen from above. Though its brand new the issue with this unit is its missing an adaptor harness to connect it to a power source or to a factory radio player which I dont have and so I doubt you would want to buy it off me but ill post it up anyways because if it was possible to get the unit all powered up I think it does have aux port on the face of the unit when the screen is in the closed position which could be used for connecting an aux cable into from a modern day bluetooth unit. It also the ability to connect a video source to it on one of the rear connectors which could be used for a reverse camera setup if you wanted to. If you want more factory stereo examples I have a collection of photof several of the stereos that were avaiable for the JDM models which I can show you and I have checked and there is a factory radio & CD player unit for sale in Japan right now on yahoo auctions which is roughly $70. https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/o1055268380
True, but I'm a stubborn bugger for old tech. Although there were some very cool old double din set ups that I would swap to if I can find one. Otherwise I'll find a period correct radio and cd player single din. Adamzx, thank you for the photos but I'll pass on those.
For the radio display colours on older radios, You might get lucky and they may have a colour lens filter that can be removed. If what you settle on does, Then replace them with lighting colour filters to match the rest of the car's lighting scheme. (If you search eBay, key words are: lighting colour film) At one stage, my older Z31 that had the digital dash ( power supply fail so converted to analogue dash), I changed out the colour lenses for a mulit coloured dash
Man I'm all for period correct but a bluetooth phone connection at least is a must for me. I absolutely do not miss the days of having a receiver clipped to the sun visor!
Ahah, yeah understandable, I've been rocking an aux cord for a few years now. As modern as I need it!
IMO, what ryzan said: There's no harm holding on to the original tape deck and fitting a tidy aftermarket unit with carplay to enjoy the current day mod-cons. There are some good quality double din fascias on the market for this exact purpose. Having a 7" double din with Android Auto and being able to stream music and 'maps' for GPS navigation is awesome and will make you love your Z even more! It also modernisers the interior, without looking out of place or over done. The OEM units were good for their time but need to move on and have access to modern 'technology'! Also save on weight, LOL
I see where you're coming from, but modernizing is the last thing I want to do. Maybe it's because I'm young and grew around tech that I want to get away from it, or in the garage the Zed is the youngest car by a few decades, regardless bring in the analogue!!! This is definitely the most techy car I'll own until I have a missus that makes me get something modern and comfortable for her, but till then I'll live under my rock
If you're looking for something with modern functionality but is period correct looking then I highly recommend the Blaupunkt Bremen SQR46. It has all of the modern stuff like Bluetooth, USB, and SD etc. (last two being cleverly hidden behind the 'tape deck' door flap). It looks great and sounds great in my ol Z32. The illumination is RGB, so colour can be adjusted to whatever you like. I have it set to match the rest of the factory illumination near perfectly https://www.soundlabsgroup.com.au/p/Blaupunkt-Bremen-SQR-46.html
