Hello, recently I've had a weird issue when sometimes braking the radio will suddenly turn off and turn back on. Also noticed it for the first time when pressing the clutch in today. It can go away for a week, and then happen 5 times in a drive, or just once or twice during a day (drive around 40k's on average). Any ideas? Only started about a month ago.
Dodgy wiring (someone may have run an earth or power wire past the pedals -no idea why) or a faulty head unit.
Wiring hasn't been touched since leaving the factory, same with the head unit. It's just weird that it happens when braking, also happened with the clutch again just 20 minutes ago as of writing this. Was hoping that would narrow it down to what it could be.
Regardless of being not touched, it sounds like a loose connection that is affected by inertia via braking or deceleration with your clutch. Plugs can get bad connections even though they are clipped in. I would suggest unplug your radio and check the wires are tight in the plug and the female pins are not flared open too much. Also check the earth that is secured to the body that is behind the radio too. Check wiring condition too as they can crack over time. it could be your radio power wire is earthing out under braking.
Will do thank you, interestingly it was raining today and didn't happen at all. I wonder if there is a under the car wiring issue where water ingress has caused some issues. Maybe the alternator to transmission wiring harness? I sure don't know.
From your comments of it not being touched from the factory I'm assuming it's the factory tape deck and cd player combination, if so your issue is likely within the units, probably a dry solder joint.z There are no under body harnesses that could cause an issue like this. If it was the alternator harness and you had no engine splash shield you'd see a lot more voltage related issues before the stereo cutting out became a concern.
Yep I do, one of the last ones, series 2 95. Interesting, I don't have the tape deck, only CD and storage deck underneath. Maybe the head unit was swapped out at some time? I don't believe so but the car had some random bits when it left the Sydney Hornsby dealership (not sure if it's still open anymore), turbo 4 point wing, Motorola phone, etc. Is there a simple way to check if its the unit or the car? Although it's electrics so its never simple...
You've got an aftermarket head unit fitted then, all aus-delivered 300's had the clarion tape deck fitted with later models having the CD player installed in the lower DIN slot. Your problem almost certainly lies with the wiring done by whoever installed the head unit.
Bugger, you're right. I wonder why they had the cd player/radio moved to the top? Went through the old receipts from the cars life and in 2006 the head unit got swapped out at the same time the tinting was done. Thing is as old as me, so can't say I'm surprised its kicked the bucket. There's a very good and reputable auto audio shop near me which I'll bring it into at some point, I haven't chosen between something new that looks old, or a Pioneer AVH-3500NEX. It's a nifty single din radio that can fold out a screen with all the goodies. Although I will miss my CD stack and tactile switches.... Damn old style it is, any suggestions? Looks like I'm starting another piggy bank
Looking back at it, was quite obvious it wasn't the factory head unit , don't know what lala land I was in. I know I could fix it but I've never liked the look of its flashy lights and late 90's early 00's styling that has aged like milk, so perfect excuse to find something period correct. I've started the rabbit hole of vintage looking single din head units which retain the CD function and a AUX and its been fairly disappointing results, basically nothing, just all flashy LED screens and single dial on the left. Now considering getting a actual vintage head unit but this is a whole rabbit hole I do not have the time to go down on (end of school exams in a few of weeks). I am considering swapping to a double din set up, although has to hit the above requirements and as a last ditch effort if I can't find a single din or a double din set up that steals my heart. If I can find a factory radio that would be very nice, or anything period correct at this point. If you guys have any leads that would be greatly appreciated. Or maybe I should just start a new thread at this point...
With my Z31, I bought a Kia Rio single din Radio/cd player. I was fortunate with it though, It was new old stock, so it had security code card, user manual and harness plugs. So as a general idea you could look at other car makes for period correct tastefully designed CD/radios.
Yeah, I like alot of the European/Japanese 80's early 90's units. Would be great if I could track down a working original Z32 cassette and radio player with the plugs for it. If not, things like these old alpines and pioneers are the look I'm going for, but preferably a white/green backlight to match the clock and climate controls.
I have a collection of factory optional cd player units and even a flip out screen found on the later 98+ models but the connectors to connect it up will be the difficult part to find
I'm not sure my car came with both, also was reading on the original Bose system and they seem to be very problematic so I'll be passing on those thank you and will be finding a alternative. Gives me the option to also get a single din cd changer/player and a radio/cassette on the top. How difficult would that be to do? I'd get a audio shop to do the wiring as that's one of the things I leave to the professionals, but is it even possible? Or will I need to get a new sub harness?
Found a really cool Pioneer KEH-8080SDK, I retract my previous statement, amber lights all the way. Now I just need to find a dedicated cd player which seems to be troublesome.
Right, so two things. The z32 cd player was officially part B8182 89921, but I noticed that the cd player B8182 89920 was completely identical on how it looks. Comes from a 200sx. Any idea if they are compatible? Link for one is here; https://www.1factoryradio.com/produ...tier-maxima-sentra-cd-player-part-b8182-89920 Secondly, noticed this cd player/6 disk changer on a 96 American turbo. Apparently its factory? I have only found one photo of it. If any of you know what it is or know where one is please do tell, as I will go for a factory system if I can get my hands on one of these.
There are a whole bunch of factory cd player options for the z32. I have the optional Kenwood cd player that came on the 97 models, I also have 2 of the optional Clarion 3 disc single din stacker player. My z is running the factory mini disc player radio from the 98+ models plus the optional 98+ flip out screen player.
Interesting, do they both have the same plug and go into the stock cassette player/radio no problem? If so do you have photos of them + prices. I may consider picking one up off you if you're selling.
