    Hi i am looking to buy a 300zx (1989 - 1994) TT 5spd Maunal.

I have heard some up and down stories about zx engines. However more have been negative than positive.

I would like to know in general how are the VG30(DETT) engines? from personal experience.

Are they a hassel compared to engines like the rb20, sr20?

Also could you let me know how you treat your car (ie. thrash it hard all the time or use it as cruzer and plant it occasionaly).

I know this may have been posted before however i wanted some personal (unbiased) opinions of actual owners of 300'z.

Thanks in advance for reading this, and an even greater thanks if you take the time to reply. Because i have been waiting so long for this car and now that i am looking to buy it and a lot of my friends have told me to be very careful. And even consider other cars like Skylines.

    Thanks Once again
    Please enlighten me

AngPS. I have even been advised by some people in this forum that a NA 300 is a better way to go as opposed to the TT.

parker Been around for a bit

    get into one

I have a VN berlina as well as my 1990 tt 5speedZ. And let me tell you that the Zed makes the commie look very bad in every area. If you plan to work on the zed yourself you can so long as you have pretty good mechanical skills. The engine bay is damn tight. But if I can work on it anyone can! I cruise most of the time but when I get into it, it delivers! If you are young like me the Insurance is also a killer. Don't listen to your mates as there is one word for them.....Jealous. Enjoy.Parks:

    Thanks Parker

You put a smile on my face. As you keep my hopes up for getting this Z.I was just reading the forum and i read something about the 1989 & 1990 z'z having a engine problem and then in the later models the parts were changed???I am confused. As far as i knew the engines were the same!

Get one - but be careful...

You have no idea how incredible these cars are. They are over-engineered so you can sap heaps of horsepower out them without much risk of damage. I don't drive it like a maniac, but give it the chance, it'll not disappoint. I have driven some rad-modified GTS-Ts, and though fast (not as fast), they don't have the class nor feel of a Z.The only semi-serious problem worth considering that you can have with a pre-93, is PTU failure which will kill the engine until fixed. However, it can be upgraded to the post-93 PTU for about $400 - goodbye problem. Before buying, read the articles in this forum that advise on what to look for, and don't just go for what is cheap, as repair costs (if you don't do it yourself) can be pricey. Avoid thrashed animals - just like you would any other car. Have the car checked by a Z-expert if you are unsure. You may also consider importing your own if you want a cheapy.CheerZ

    I'm loving mine...

I have a 90 TT 300zx manual and am pretty happy with it.I use it mainly to get to uni and back, so during those times I'm pretty tight on cash and can't afford to give it too much because the fuel costs kill me. Fuel economy is about 400-450 from about 55L when just going easy. Can drop to about 200-300 when giving it hell.I give it a fair bit on the weekends occasionally and I've had it for about 6 months and still not a problem. That is running 17psi, bmc f1 pod filter and 2.5" cat back exhaust and soon an underdrive pulley. The only problem really and that was my fault is a new clutch, the old one just wasn't holding the power any more, slipping under strain etc, put a 6 button brass/ceramic clutch in it from uas which didn't help. That's being sorted out as we speak a standard clutch for these things holds about 630kg's, the one uas gave me after installation and then removal because it was still slipping was tested at only 670kg of clamping pressure. Should be around the 880kg if the 40% increase is true to the word... but anyway that's another issue. I'll update on how they treat me on that one.

get one if you really want one champ

I have had mine for a year and cruise most of the time. insurance on a tt is quite expensive so if you are tight for cash then maybe the NA is the go. Although there is nothing better than planting your foot and UNLEASHING THE FURY!:YD i have been surprised time and time again by the handling and performance of my car. its really up to you and how much you can afford. dont forget to factor in tyre and Maintenance costs. these cars are getting on abit. a ten year old car no matter what it is is still a ten year old car.Stan

    go for it

i have a z with plenty of hp and run a standard box but a strong clutch. Unfortunately for the car it cops a hiding more times than not and i can say nothing has ever given way or broken. The main driveline of the cars are extremely strong and could not really be faulted. If u are buying a tt u have to expect that things are going to wear quicker or may have little probs that u prob wouldnt have with an na. This is just a general that goes with the territory. If u love the car i would push u in every way possible into buying the turbo. Hope all goes well enjoy the car:YD

great cars and I love mine but....

can be costly to repair. If you decide to get one, make sure you get it fully inspected by a mech who knows Zs before handing over any cash. Also, don't go for the cheapest one you can find, spend a little more cos it will save you in the long run. I'd recommend you get one locally, so that you can get it inspected.

    Not a day car though

I am on my second zed and I cant imagine being without one now. I thought of selling it for the cash recently but glady I did'nt have to. If just to be in the zed community I would buy a zed as the help, feedback and friendship from the people here is incredible. People I have just met have been very generous with there time and assistance. For parts there is a link to ttzed.com and he sources zed bits. I dont think you will find this with skylines to the same extent.

If you enjoy a head turning sports car this will give you the buzz e.g. mg's. But it will also perform extremely well. My TT zed has had its cantankarous days but its just like a good woman (you can add ya bitz in here yourselves) they have to be taken care of. And now I am thinking of ways to blow cash on her again sigh.
So to sum it all up
The other day I was told they use skylines for TAXI'S in japan! case closed.

    from my experence

I would like to know in general how are the VG30(DETT) engines? + Are they a hassel compared to engines like the rb20, sr20?Well because of the crampped engine bay prepared to pay more for it if you want to strap on bigger turbo's or do mods to the car. + if somthing goes wrong expect to pay more too.The main things that u'll have to replace are usually sensors and clutchs (going on what most ppl have problems with on here)Also could you let me know how you treat your car (ie. thrash it hard all the time or use it as cruzer and plant it occasionaly)I just go from work and back with mine however i also use my zed for motorsport such as Motorkhanas and Track days, and it holds up really well after giving it a good poke. Only tyres and brakes are an issue (as with any car)
All in all their a designed sports car so just look after it which means service it regularly and if you find a problem make sure u fix it straight away. I wave or flash my light at any zed i see on the road and so far all have given me some sort of recognition back (even non club members), and i have a feeling if i owned a skyline that wouldn't be the case.Cheres,Red Z.

    THANK YOU ALL!

I currently own a broken down exa. I love the car and it was mu cruiser on hot days. However not its time for my dream, My Z. If there is one thing i noticed while driving my exa it was the enthusiasm of other exa owners. They seemed to always say hi when driving past.As mentioned by another member of this forum, it seems as though you Z owners are the same. I am glad to know that you guys are enthuastic owners who are willing to help out the newbies to ZX's.I hope to meet as many of you as i can when i get my Z.Thank's to all who took the time to help me out.
Your input and opinions have helped a lot.
And i wanted an opinion of a actual OWNER of a Z other that those that say "I heard from this and that that the suck!"Once again, Thanks,Ang

    zeds

man i reckon you should run the risk and get a TT i did and never look back
i own a VLT that is nothin compared to my zed,
and that was a serious buildup on the VLT, and there is not a day that i go without mashin the throttle and wasting rice boys left and right
    they are choice
you should get it you wont be disappointed
and dont buy a dog there is lots of uncared machines out there with dodgy paintjobs whizz bang full sick body kits and so on you'll be able to choose the good ones from the bad ones
dont trust car salesman either they speak more S@#T than anyone who just talk it up make out this zed is the bees nees when its actually a hunk of crap
    good luck
and for a good well cared for TTZ 5 speed look at least 20k thats a WELL CARED for zed not a dodgy
and alwaysd have about 5 k handy after purchase for small things that may go wrong
other than that for parts and stuff
simon from TTZED will be the main man for the gear you need
and btw a nissan skyline is a poor mans sports car
just a jazzed up taxi with two doors, and a true sports car is a 300zx
    good luck
and choose wisely as the wrong choice will hurt the back pocket :YD
