    Progress Report!

Intake cam covers removed, cleaned and resealed.

Finger sliced through to the bone by engine heads, fixed with duct tape so I could keep working :)

Gave up on polishing the plenum, this will have to do!

EGR bolt LOST somewhere in the depths of the drivers side of the bay... Another EGR bolt CROSSTHREADED as it wouldn't go in straight = NOT HAPPY!

Still can't find the bolt... considering a 'wanted' poster.

Love the manliness! Duct tape and a clean rag is WAY better than bandaids or bandages.

What's with your funky reo bar?

It's styrofoam in the middle to support/cushion the front bumper? I thought they were all like that...

The duct tape was to stop my finger from bending... every time it bent it would pull all the flesh apart again!

Hmmm, I can't recall being hurt by my Z before... other than the usual scratches and grazes. Perhaps you mean the hedge-trimmer accident to my ankle? The finger is all closed up and on the mend, gonna leave another nice scar though :)

I do have gloves, that's the sad thing. I just happened to not be wearing them at that particular time

Tonight I've reinstalled the turbo hardpipes, coilpacks, injector connectors, most of the main loom connectors although there's a plug or 2 behind the plenum I must have forgotten about I'll have to find later, balance pipe is sitting in place but not yet secured... we're getting there.

I'm giving my EBC the flick... I donno what's wrong with it! I ran some tests on the weekend. The control unit applies a voltage to the solenoid when it receives a boost reading so that is good. The solenoid does open and pass air through when I apply 15PSI to the system (using air compressor) but it does not click. It holds for a second and then lets the air pass. You can hear the air coming out the driver's wastegate (but not the passenger...) when it opens. If you disconnect the solenoid and apply 15PSI it won't let the air pass - closed solenoid. SO the solenoid opens and closes, but it doesn't do it...properly... I don't know, I give up and I'm going back to my $20 Turbotech :p

Fingers crossed the engine will be starting this weekend!! :D

Exhaust cam cover on the passenger side has a leak at the back of the engine.

I didn't do the exhaust covers because I couldn't get to the bolts because the EGR pipes were in the way. Chrispy suggested just to bend them carefully out of the way but by that time I'd already secured the plenum back on complete with new gasket. I though I could get away without doing them...

    It seems I was WRONG!

Oh well... I will use some gasket goo in the meantime to try and minimise the oil loss but it will just have to wait until next time the Z is off the road, it's nearly ready to start the engine!

So now to the new issues:
Idle is now @ 2000RPM, AAC is 75 and Timing is 36BTDC when engine is @ 80C.
What to I need to adjust to fix the idle? I'll be reading and searching regardless...

Oil is leaking from above the lower radiator hose... in the 15 minutes the engine was idling it's dripped as much oil as I'd find after a long drive and left it sitting overnight.

I need to seal up the holes in the test pipes where the AIV(?) system connects.

Hopefully the Magnaflow X-pipe will come very soon so I can get it installed and the exhaust shop can weld up the holes in the TPs.

Fenders and Front bar need to go back on.

I still want a bigger oil cooler!

Another thing too, if you want to replace the IACV/AAC hose that is a 90 degree elbow, you can use a water bypass hose from a Camry '92-onward and just trim it to the right length :) $8 from Repco and easier than getting it from Nissan... for me anyways.

    oil leaky leaky
go for a drive = one dinner plate sized oil stain on the driveway.
Block is wet from top to bottom.
Sprays onto exhausts while driving, making for a lovely smoke screen when stopped at the lights :), not that I've driven it for a while now :)

Well the rear leak seems to have subsided after taking it for a drive... but it now backfires quite violently at WOT every now and then! Some poor people up the road were jumping for cover when a red Z comes flying at them accompanied by the sound of gunshots

Anyway, the final photos in what seemed an epic adventure I hope I shall never do again...

On another note, I picked up one of those $25 Jaycar "Bargain Bags" and was surprised how much you get for $25!

I'm over it. Driver's turbo is smoking bad, hoping my centre muffler will fix it but who know when that will arrive, and there's no guarantee that will fix it. It smokes white smoke but stinks like oil. It sill smoke 100% of the time, anywhere between and including idle and WOT.

Mine did that, $70 Xpipe and the problems fixed. Used to smoke if it idled for awhile or after coming off wot

Like I said the other day, try the x-pipe, you may get lucky. I suspect the violent backfiring may have damged the turbo seal. As far as I know it wasn't smoking this bad before you pulled it down. It is quite bad now from what I seen the other day.
