    Hi all,
Need some help, I ran over a screw the other day and I've been told that it can't be fix as it is borderline on the sidewall of the tyre ...

Anyways...I've got an odd matching pair at the back and I don't really want an odd matching pair at the front too..so have decided to replace all my tyres..

My rims are 18 x 8 all round, I currently have 225/40/18 all round (which I have been told is a weird set-up)...

Anyways what I want to know is what is a good wheel set-up...I have searched, and I'm thinking that Front 235/40/18 and Rear 245/40/18 is an alright set-up? Anyone got any other ideas?

Also what tyres do you guys recommend? And do you know the costs roughly?
I've read about people recommending 2 main types:
    - Nexan N3000
    - Maxxi's MA-Z1s

Just wanna get a few opinions before I start calling around tomorrow for tyre prices...

idieally if you have a 245 rear tyre you'd want a 225 front tyre. you can fit a 255 tyre on the back on an 8inch rim i used to run that for many years no problems. i had 235 front and 255 at rear was a good combination (my setup is diff now though i run 235 front and 275 rear atm).

i havnt tried those tyres but i have some lexani's at the front atm 235's. i think they are copies of the n3000's and they seem to be relativly good ive been through the twisties with them and they held up well. i got them from motorsports in dandenong. im happy to purchase them again. for the rears ive got toyo proxies, and i love them pretty expensive compared to others but they 275's so its a given....

Nexen's are excellent. Chili has promoted these tyres for years and I like the handling - not sure if 3000's still available. Have you been quoted prices?

have you thought about buying from tirerack.com? Really good value at the moment with the exchange rate & will mean you can get a proper performance tyre for your money.

i would just run a 235/40/18 on all 4 wheels, seeing as you are running 8" wide all round. that way you can rotate tyres front to rear if you need to.
I have used Bridgestone re001 for the last 2 years and they are very good tyres, bit expensive compared to the 2 tyres you have listed though so depends how much you want to spend.

Haven't been quoted any prices yet as I just found out today that my tyre can't be mended..

Just thought I would get some opinions off here first...

Yeah I was a bit worried that they probably don't produce the Nexen 3000s anymore, as the threads I had read were 3 years old...

I'm not after anything insane..I just want a decent tyre for a decent price..and very soon, as I currently have no transport..so thanks lidz, but I won't be ordering anything online..need one of the local shops to have tyres that are right to go on tomorrow

Have purchased N3000's in the last 8 months for the TT. 275x40x17's for the rear. Good tyre. Nice grip in all conditions, good wear and very quiet. Cant remember cost, but was quite reasonable.

Just ordered Federal SS595s from option1garage in QLD, $168ea for 235/35R19 and $181ea for 265/30R19... really awesome price imo, I think they would be better than Nexens.

im running the maxxis tyres in a 255 on the back (i think, maybe 245) and 225 on the front on a 18, and they are a really good tyre and very well priced.......means when you want to give the car a run at the drags or a tskid pan day or a motorkhana, if you do wreck the tyres its not mega bucks to replace them all.....

Are you going for budget or good quality?

Lately, I've put Bridgestone Potenza RE50s on my cars. Price is relatively high but the tyres are great in all conditions. They generally get good reviews. A little road noise but you can't really hear it over a standard Z exhaust anyway.

What are you comparing Maxxis to? I found them and nankangs (the only 2 cheap end tyres I've ever used) to be terrible compared to the better brands. But then again, you can buy a full set for the price of one Pzero Rosso or conti contact sport which are now my 2 tyre preference of choice.

i sell new cars for a living (or try to anyway lol) and ive driven alot of cars with alot of different tyres on them. now i know that its not apples with apples when you talk about different types of cars running different tyres, but for the money, the maxxis is good bang for your buck, not the best, but very good non the less.....quite a few of the Wa guys use them and like them......

tyres are like oil though, everyones got a favourite for different reasons......(redline for me hehe)

DinoZ Talks sh#t for a living.

Kumho KU31 is well priced and offers similar grip & wear to Nexen 3000.
Kumho KU36 will give you much more grip than KU31 but trade off is tyre life.
Only count on about 10,000km out of a set of KU36 but you will have a lot of fun.
Should be able to get a set (4) fitted for around $700

There's certainly a market for them, and I know alot of zed drivers are on a budget and dropping $1500 - $2k on a set of tyres is difficult, but almost all of us also drive in a manner that budget tyres aren't advisable, especially in a TT. Throw in the mix cheap coilovers and worn bushings, etc...meh, I'm sure you get my drift.

The kumhos would probably be my 1st choice if I needed to get new tyres,

but I run Maxxis at the moment as yes they're cheap and I like the tread pattern on them. Great grip in all conditions, hairy moments aren't so hairy as they grip real quick :D.

Thanks for all the replies guys..I think I'll ring around for the Maxxi's MA-Z1s

I'm a pretty sedate driver..but all the tyres I've had on the zed have been really shit..EG. Falkens and some other crappy tyre...My current tyres are called Ceat Tornados..which are also another cheapo brand, but they are alright..so I'm pretty sure any other tyre brand I get that anyone recommends will be a HUGE improvement..

I'm thinking I might even stick with the 225/40/18 all round..Does anyone know the lifespan of used tyres that sit in a garage? Cause if I do this, I can keep my other 3 tyres which are still fine and have plenty of tread on them, as spares in case I have another run in with a screw..

They should last a while as long as you keep it out of the sun so it doesn't get cracks... keep it moisturised somehow.

The Maxxi MA-Z1s are not comparable at all to the Bridgestone RE001s for a performance tyre but as a daily driver tyre they would be fine.

After driving with them on the GTR for a couple of weeks, they did get a bit better so I wasn't as concerned about the lateral stiffness of the tyres and I didn't have any traction issues. It really doesn't matter anymore now since the GTR is gone and the new owner had no issues with the tyres :D

I really don't see the need to go bigger than a 225 either, its just costing more money and if you stagger them as someone mentioned, you can't rotate them anymore...thought the Maxxis are a directional tyre so you could only rotate them front to back anyway.

    Cheers,

    Craig

Ren, I've always been really happy with the Goodyear Eagle F1's. I've had 2 sets now and will gladly throw my money towards another set when the time comes.
